    Mt. Prospect, Holderness, NH 01/31/08

I love Sweetser's amazingly detailed panoramic descriptions, which seem accurate, to the extent vistas haven't changed, from the couple of times I've copied his pages before a hike. It's remarkable that "Mt. Wachuset" in Mass. could once be seen from this summit. Since a couple of the links...

    Thoreau Falls Bridge Removal?

Here's how that bridge looked when I crossed it last August 23: Here's another photo I took from the middle of that bridge, looking northwest to Bondcliff and Bond: I don't recall wondering how easy it would have been to get across if the bridge disappeared but as far as I recall, it was...

    NH Bike Week has started

Driving to Toby Keith (who was great) in Gilford tonight, our ill-considered route from the NE took us right through Weirs Beach, which is Ground Zero for Bike Week - quite a scene, and a lot of fun to observe, as many others clearly feel, since lawn chairs filled with relaxed imbibers lined the...

    Mt Davis On Montalban Ridge

If you have two cars, an alternative that I much enjoyed in a group hike 9 years ago takes in nearly all of Davis Path. We took Glen Boulder Trail up to Davis Path, took the short detour north to Boott Spur, then took Davis Path south to its end at 302 in Crawford Notch, taking the spurs to the...

A new danger in the Mountains? (Tick borne disease)

I wore permethrin brand-name long-sleeved shirt, hat and long pants, tucked into socks, on two hikes in the north end of Evans Notch today and still picked a couple of dog ticks off those pants. Not washed many times but I guess it wears off quickly. I thinks ticks are on the uptick throughout...

Best Short Quick Easy Hikes In NH

This was my first thought, and I'm surprised someone beat me to it as I don't think it is widely known. Another big-bang-for-slight-exertion is Black Cap, at the north end of the Green Hills of Conway, which you can reach by an easy Trail of about half a mile from the height of land on...

finding Thompson Falls (the one on Moat Brook)

I hiked to your Thompson Falls in May 2013. I hiked it as a short loop at the north end of the Moat Mineral Site Trail, after parking at the south end Trailhead for that, which is at the end of High Street. The whole thing was less than 3 miles and took less than two hours. There are good...

    Snow-free trails 2015?

Moosilauke Carriage Road today was snow-free until 4,300 feet. That left a quarter-mile to junction with Glencliff, with a few bare spots where southern exposure but mostly deep. soft snow. There were some major postholes, as in three feet or so, but the surface had enough firmness that I...

worth a new "Best restaurant for post-hike dinner in Whites" thread ?

On a Sunday morning back in the '80s, I had the best pancakes of my life at Polly's Pancake Parlor. The bacon was outstanding too - thick-cut and crisp but not tough. The pancakes were simple buttermilk, I think with pecans. Not novelty but perfect execution. There was a line to get in and...

    Mahoosuc Notch

There was such ice last June 28 too, but I'm told it is gone, or at least inaccessible, later in the year. There was ice in Ice Gulch even on last August 30. To get the full effect of either, you need a warm day, because the temperature instantly drops a good 10 or 15 degrees when you enter the...

    Mahoosuc Notch

I agree that Icy Gulch is similar to Mahoosuc Notch and a good prep. I don't agree about doing it downhill. I hiked this solo last Summer, after the Mahoosuc Notch hike, and was glad to be scrambling up, not down. It's a matter of personal preference and perhaps of balance - I get nervous...

    Mahoosuc Notch

With another VFTT member, I did this as day-hike late last June. We spotted one car at the Speck Pond Trailhead and the other at the Notch Trailhead, which is on a short side road off Success Pond Road. We went up Notch Trail to Mahoosuc Notch Trail, climbing up the Notch from south to north and...

Seaching for Bigfoot on Bald Mtn and long lost Mt Whittier Cabin 5-9-2015

If the summit jar on Bald has signatures as far back as '09, mine would have been one. I had heard that it might be gone, but obviously not. I never noticed one on Whittier. I wonder why, as I don't think it's on any list, unlike Bald. The jumbly boulders around the Whittier summit were a...

The length of Rhode Island on The North South Trail, 4/23-4/27/15

The North-South Trail doesn't exactly lend itself to through-hiking in one fell swoop, I'd say, but an intrepid trekker like you can do it, and I much enjoyed reading how you did. Vanover's excellent guide doesn't encourage camping but he includes a few pages of information on it. Cumulus and...

    Top 25 New England Hikes

All but Mt. Hunger and Stowe Pinnacle. I need to spend more time in Vermont. All but Mt. Pisgah, Gulf Hagas and Moxie Falls among the runners-up. Of course, the list is arbitrary and no doubt differs from what I might come up with (but I wouldn't try).

Cobble Mountain - Abandoned Ski Area 5-4-2015

I skied the Cobble Mtn. Trail a couple of Sundays ago. Combined with the Maple Trail and a few connecting segments of other Trails, it makes a nice loop from the XC Center - a good cardio workout ascending Cobble and big fun descending Maple. I was back at Gunstock on Saturday for downhill and...

Best restaurant for post-hike dinner in Whites

We've been enjoying the Smokehouse for over 25 years, spanning several owners and some fairly subtle shifts in menu. Their barbecue is very good but not Memphis. The sauce has always been on the bland side. Fries and onion rings decent but could be much better. Slaw OK. If you dine there...

Best restaurant for post-hike dinner in Whites

Jake's it is - temporary brain cramp. The various seafood things we've tried there have all been good. Of their sides, the onion rings are outstanding - crisp but light - better than at any other place we've tried in that vicinity (which is all of them). They feature a variety of margaritas...

Best restaurant for post-hike dinner in Whites

I second this endorsement. The menu is more varied than you might expect and the quality and prices are good. Somewhat in the same vein is Jake's Seafood, about 5 miles to the south, on the same side of Rt 16, in Ossipee. Lots of good seafood selections and excellent, reasonably priced margaritas.
