    They're Here (Black Flies)

Conspicuous by their near absence on trails around Sunapee today. 7 miles, no protection, no bites, just a few blackflies after 3 pm near the end of the hike, and they didn't seem to be biting yet.

To have a Camera and a Plane

I liked the photos of ski areas and trying to ID them. #5 is Cannon and #19 Attitash, but I'm not sure about #13 (Loon?) or #16 (Wildcat?).

White Mountain National Forest Quarter in 10 days

True, so I don't think one can reasonably criticize the U.S. Mint. I don't think you can blame Senator Weeks either, since the Weeks Act, as passed in 1911, did not specify the locations to be purchased. While the WMNF was not established until 1918, purchases of parts of it pursuant to the...

Congratulations to the latest Grid Finishers - Earl and Sue

Congratulations to both for this epic quest! This was almost enough to overcome my disinterest in Winter peakbagging, although I too learned about it only at the last minute, since I don't frequent Facebook that much, but since I don't even own a pair of microspikes, I would have been a...

    Here's an interesting perspective...

Interesting Bird's-Eye View of the White Mountains, and the first I've seen that includes Effingham's Green Mtn. (but labeled "Mt. Green"). In 1890, it was a lot closer to Black Cap in No. Conway than it is today. Tectonic drift or something, I suppose. :-)

White Mountain National Forest Quarter in 10 days

The "National Park Quarters" - the second States series - started in 2010 and I think NH is the 16th. You can get inexpensive albums to display them in. We've been getting many from the guy who sells me the newspaper every morning.

Nicely done, as in showing each of the Three Sisters.

    East Rattlesnake

I like those trails on the east half of the Rattlesnakes, and enjoyed seeing them in the snow. Butterworth and E. Rattlesnake don't look like much on a map, but are good cardio pushers with some fine views near the top.

    Views from the Carribean?

We have been to St. Lucia twice, staying each time for about a week, once at the south end and then at the north end of the Island. It is beautiful, especially the Pitons, and there are some excellent hiking possibilities, but unless things have changed over the past 10 years, it has much less...

    Views from the Carribean?

I haven't been to Dominica, but have been to many other Caribbean islands and St. John wins hands down, for the combination of hiking and wonderful beaches. Well over a hundred miles of trails, I believe (cf. Trail Bandit's terrific map), and many hills, topped by Bordeaux Mtn., although that...

    Q2C gets $500,000 boost

Friends of mine who live in central Mass. have hiked most of what has been blazed of a new hiking trail called the "Quabbin to Monadnock (Q+M) Trail". They have shown me a paper trail map they bought in a local store that covers the portion that has been completed, which runs from the Doane...

The New Scudder's Guide (2nd ed. rev. 2005)

Brent S. shelved plans for a Maine edition when he decided that panoramas for summits he hadn't been to himself weren't practicable. I am happy to hear that he is making progress on his "roadside panoramas" volume, on which he has been working for several years.

    Exploring Thoreau's Maine

Thanks for the head's up. This book sounds worthwhile. Thoreau's own The Maine Woods, which as I recall covers all three of those trips, is a great read and widely available, including free, online.

    Jeremy the Red Liner

The same Jeremy who completed the Grid a year or so ago? Quite a combo, especially since he also has an active sideline in underappreciated hikes outside the ambit of the White Mountain Guide.

    The Last Mountain

This is interesting. The late Professor Jeffrey Rubin of Tufts, who was 54 at the time, perished on a solo hike to Fort from No. Brother in June 1995. Fort would have completed (and perhaps did, since the search party that found his body had no way of knowing his route) his NEHH. Another...

Mt Tecumseh Trail Historical Question for long term hikers in the whites.

I hiked what must be the south 70% or so of that old trail, from Welch to the summit of Green Mtn., two years ago, and my companion had previously hiked the other 30%, from there to Tecumseh. It was a more or less distinct herd-path throughout. The unnamed summit south of Green Mtn. on that...

    48 x 3 + 67 = 1 Incredible Day on Mt Carrigain - 9/29/12

Nothing like a little drama to spice a list-finishing hike, at least when the ending is happy. Carrigain was socked in the first time I hiked it too. The views demand a clear-day return, as I'm sure you will (and a shorter hike to boot). Sorry I couldn't join you, but the Utah Parks and...

    Kearsarge North Mountain

A fine mountain, and the main trail can be slippery. I remember a hard whack to my elbow when I stepped on an unsuspected little patch of ice, a few Novembers ago. A less slippery, less popular but longer alternative is the Weeks Brook Trail from the east. It includes an excellent view of...

    Blueberry Mountain Trail temporarily reopened

SteveHiker and I hiked the whole trail, with a carspot, two weekends ago - Saturday of Labor Day weekend. It was fine, but there were signs of fairly heavy logging activity at both ends, particularly around the east end, near the Long Pond (North-South) Road trailhead, which you have to watch...
