    the Moats

Ted O'Brien didn't get anywhere near the Moat Ridge. It appears he wandered off the Attitash Trail near Lucy Brook and never got very far along to Bear Notch. It still puzzles me. Forestgnome - that grape looks like a purple flowering raspberry. You can eat the fruit but it's blah.

    Old Blue (Andover, ME)

In 1995 Pat and I climbed Old Blue from South Arm Road on the AT which was brand new then, with krummholz-like branches still covering the very soft and duff-covered path. There were more views than now. We made a loop via the Clearwater Brook Trail which was still in excellent shape. One of...

    Looking For Some Ideas

A very timely question for me, Earl. Since I've been under treatment for leukemia (since last December), my hiking has been severely curtailed, and all I can really manage is about 1500'/4 hours or so. I'm progressing, but the future is not 100% certain and I must say hiking is what I'd miss...

Thanks for the greenie, Jen. I am on day 83 post-transplant and on target. Energy's not bad and I do sneak out for some hikes, but can't tell my doctor!

flowers of Tuckerman Ravine in July

The blue flowers with the bristly leaves and calyces look like a speedwell...perhaps Veronica wormskjoldii (alpine speedwell).

flowers of Tuckerman Ravine in July

Patrick, this is such a treat! The yellow "daisy" may be Arnica mollis (hairy arnica), having apparently opposite leaves and is more suited to the Tuck's environment; The purple twin flowers look like a marsh skullcap (Scutellaria galericulata) - was it near water? The bristly-leaved blue...

    Slow Hike

You did have a productive day! That's a northern water snake. They vary in color, and this one's particularly dark.

    Favorite White Mtn swimming holes

Some of those suggestions require a hike in.

The Landing Camp Trail. Has anyone else hiked it?

Looks like my kind of trail! You'd like the Rob Brook Trail that has a few how-do-I-not-sink-in-the-quagmire sections.

    Colorado hiking maps?

When we were in the San Juans a few years ago, I used a NatGeo Trails Illustrated map (#141) for Silverton/Lake City etc. It was all I needed plus information from Summitpost. My Roach's 14ers book is too old and did not accurately describe the nasty approaches to trailheads. Next time I'd rent...

I fought the grouse and the grouse won!

Buffalo, you've got a gift for story-telling! We've been attacked by a ruffed grouse that pecked at my feet, and we've been carefully watched from above by spruce grouse, but luckily it never came to outright warfare.

    A long awaited summit!

We obviously got lucky on our midweek hike in May; early morning, after a rainstorm. It was deserted except for a few bikers.

    A long awaited summit!

Wachusett is just wonderful with the road closed! Good girl Molly! Perhaps Leo can meet you sometime. What, no muffin recipe?

Doric Temple off Red Spot trail on Monadnock

There are some clues here: http://monadnocktrails.com/StateParkSideTrails.php "Red Spot Trail is less steep than the Spellman Trail and is much less crowded than the main trails from Headquarters. The Red Spot Trail is reached by Cascade Link (1.2 miles from headquarters) from Falcon junction...

Sawyer River Exploration July 7, 2011

Did you retrace your steps and ride back the same way? I remember rumors that the Hancock Notch Trail was going to be abandoned. I hope not.

46er Finish on Skylight, June 30

Congratulations! We did that route years ago and I must say it was one of the best of my life. Since Pat and I finished the 46 on Marshall in 2005, we've wanted to go back, not least to spend more time with the wonderful New Yorkers who accompanied and encouraged us every step of the way. So...

    Mt. Mansfield VT

Rup, why didn't your wife enjoy the Haselton trail? We descended it after climbing Hell Brook and traversing the ridge and it was a nice stroll after walking on all that rock.

A Trip to Oregon and Washington

Definitely on my list! And thank you for mentioning the wildflowers, for which I sometimes have to ignore the views.
