Those pink flowers just look like mountain laurel blooms? It's kind of tough to tell cause it's blurry. But it looks like they're growing on a bush rather than growing close to the ground like "Lapland Rosebay" does.

Nice trip report! That tree in the first picture is a tamarack (larch) I believe. It's a coniferous tree that loses its needles in the winter.

    Devil's Path in a Day: 8/1/09

Yeah, it was lots of fun. An adventure I won't forget.

    Devil's Path in a Day: 8/1/09

Oh yeah. Some very nice views. Unfortunately I've never gotten any pictures from the Devil's Path. When I backpacked it last summer, my batteries died two pictures in and this time around I was too concerned about weight to bring a camera. Next time.

    Devil's Path in a Day: 8/1/09

Let me preface by saying what a hike! The only other Catskills hike that I believe may be more difficult is the BLM-Graham-Doubletop-Big Indian-Eagle-Balsam traverse I did last fall with Ralph and my buddy Jeff. A friend of mine from another hiking site posted a challenge that I could not...

Summer '09 Northeast Wild Edibles Thread

The only mushrooms I trust myself identifying is chicken of the woods. There's no mistaking it for anything else, really. Puffballs seem like they'd be easy to identify but I haven't seen any around here.

Summer '09 Northeast Wild Edibles Thread

Here in NJ we don't really have wild strawberries or wood sorrel. Just got back from New Hampshire last night and I picked my first Indian cucumber root on my way down the Tripyramids. Very crispy. I've tried sorrel in the Catskills but they just taste like the clovers that grow on my front...

Clockwise Pemi Loop in Twelve Pictures, 7/25/2009

Wow, looks like you had a great time not doing a Carter-Moriah-Wildcat traverse! :p Just kidding! Looks like you had quite an awesome trek. When I told my buddy that you were doing a Pemi loop in a day instead, he was quite humbled.

Summer '09 Northeast Wild Edibles Thread

Hey all, Every summer, I love to observe the abundance of wild edibles along the trails. Maybe it's the Swede in me but I always find myself nibbling on all sorts of berries while hiking. This year I've found so far: blueberries, huckleberries, wineberries, red raspberries, black raspberries...

    Wildcats-Carter-Moriah traverse this weekend

Hey all, My buddy and I are headed up to NH this weekend and we're looking to do the Wildcats-Carter-Moriah traverse as a day hike. Our original plan was to do it as a backpack but we're hoping to do it as a day hike if we can set up a car spot. Saturday or Sunday is fine.

    Maine July 27 - 31

Ugh. If only you had decided to go a few days earlier, I totally would have gone to Maine. I'm leaving for NH on the 24th and heading back on the 28th. Although...my buddy and I are still undecided as to what we're going to do on Monday or Tuesday so if you're willing to throw in Old Speck...

    Wildcats through Shelburne Moriah, 7/12/2009

Nice trek. Good pictures too. I'm so tempted to do the Wildcats-Carter-Moriah traverse as a day hike in a few weeks but I think I've submitted to doing it as a backpack since I have no reliable shuttle. :(

    Carter-Moriah Traverse: Need Advice

Err...sorry, I may have forgotten to mention that I'm doing the Wildcats also. So basically I'm looking to do the whole Carter-Moriah range on day 1 and then do the Wildcats on day 2.

    Carter-Moriah Traverse: Need Advice

Hey all, I'm doing a two-day Carter-Moriah backpack towards the end of July and I need some advice. We're thinking of doing a north-south traverse and then catching the shuttle at Pinkham Notch back to Gorham. So I'm looking to get a good portion of the traverse out of the way on day 1 (say...

    Three-Day Pressie Traverse: June 26-28

Yeah, I have a LOT more pictures but I only posted my favorites/the ones that came out. It's always disappointing when you set up a shot thinking it's going to be great and then when you load it onto the computer it looks awful. :o

    Three-Day Pressie Traverse: June 26-28

Oh yeah, definitely fun times. The weather was quite varied too. Hot sun and clear skies to cool rain and fog.
