    VFTT peak list

Why not establish a prominence requirement (say 200 or 300 feet) but allow any elevation? :)

Rattlers, and deer ticks, and bears, oh my!

Yeah, ticks are basically unavoidable in these parts in late March and April. There's no doubt you'll find a few clinging onto your legs and such. I've been covered in ticks from head to toe after bushwhacking. I've never had a problem with lyme disease or anything. I guess it's more of a...

Tripods, Monopods And Other Camera Supports

Once in a while I'll bring my tripod along on a hike if I'm familiar with the area and its photographic opportunities. I too have an ORIGINAL Marchioni Tiltall. It's lasted 30+ years and it's still going strong. The new Tiltall is a piece of junk. I guess nowadays it's all about carbon fiber.

Pierce Through Washington to Complete my Single Season Winter 48 - 2/16/2009

Congratulations! All of your trip reports this season have made me so jealous! I wish I lived closer to big mountains! :D Maybe you should finish all 48 in consecutive seasons. That'll keep you busy for the rest of the year!

    winter slide and hunter routes

Hunter is pretty easy from the end of Spruceton Road. If you take the trail up towards the Devil's Acre lean-to, it's not steep at all, since I believe it follows a former railbed.

    Trail sign for permitted use

Actually, I was just kidding. It looks like sand dunes behind the sign. Island Beach maybe? I don't think there's hunting there though. I've seen signs like that in the Highlands too, like Wawayanda.

    MSR Drinking Tube Defects

This has happened to the tube on my platypus bladder. I ended up having to trim the tube down several times. I didn't like the zip lock design of the bladder, since it would occasionally pop open and all the contents would spill all over the place. So I'm hoping I'll have better luck this...

    Catskills Winter Peaks

I think we're planning on going the 30th or 31st now, though I'm still not sure if we're doing the Blackhead Range. So far it's Alistair and me, along with some of Alistair's friends.

    Catskills Winter Peaks

Jay, I think I'll bring an inner tube up Balsam and Belleayre and blow it up as I exhale. By the time I get to Belleayre, it should be fully inflated and ready for a spin! :D

    Catskills Winter Peaks

I've also been thinking about Balsam. One could easily do a circular involving Balsam Mnt. Maybe a side trip to Belleayre to see what that mountain is all about?

    Catskills Winter Peaks

Hey, what do you think of a Blackhead Range traverse, starting at Barnum Rd. and ending at Batavia Kill? Should be free the 24th or 25th.

How do you guys do this???

For those of us who aren't fortunate enough to live close to big mountains, the best solution I've found is exploring locally. Within 45 minutes of my home, I have tons of hills to ramble around. Sometimes I like to just pick out random bumps on a topo map and bushwhack to it. Often enough...
