    Catskills Winter Peaks

Alistair, how about the 24th or 25th? I know you're a tough hiker so which one of those options seems the most challenging to you?

How do you guys do this???

Jay, you're lucky you're a morning person. I sleep heavy and most always wake up feeling groggy. I usually set two alarms if I have something important to do. If I manage to wake up and stumble over to the kitchen and make myself a pot of coffee, I know I'll make the 5AM start at the trailhead...

Jeeze. The internet really is deceptive. Everyone here on VFTT thinks that you spend your free time forum surfing! :p

How do you guys do this???

I know exactly how you feel. I sort of have a rule that if I'm going to the Adirondacks or New England, it has to be a multi-day trip. If I'm going to the Catskills, it usually has to be an all-day trek, or else it's not worth it. Don't get me wrong, I do enjoy driving. But if I'm going to...

    Catskills Winter Peaks

I'm looking to finish the required winter peaks this season so if anyone wants to join me on: a hike up Balsam Mountain with a side trip to Belleayre a Blackhead Range traverse a Burroughs Range circular I should be available almost any weekend for the rest of this month.

    Balsam Lake Mountain - 01/10-11/2009

Very cool. Sounds like a relaxing way to spend the weekend, no? With all that snow, I would have thought that more guests would have shown up to get warm! Guess no one was crazy enough to go up BLM during a snowstorm. :D

Finishing what we started... The elusive Seward 1/10/09

That's some mighty fine trekkin' and 'whackin' you've been doing lately up there. The Sewards ought to be some of the most difficult of the 46...

Cool. And if you ever decide to come down to the Catskills, I'd be happy to show you around the "gentle hills".

Panther Mountain via Giant Ledge - 12/30/08

Oh, man. The Devil's Path at night, huh? That's a crazy one! I'd be afraid we might run into Satan himself in one of the deep, dark notches!

    Cascade, Porter & Colden: 1/4-1/5

Thanks. I'm sure Jeff will be fine. We almost climbed Noonmark the following day before heading back home.

    Cascade, Porter & Colden: 1/4-1/5

Thank you! Yep, that was taken from the North shore of Avalanche Lake.

    Cascade, Porter & Colden: 1/4-1/5

Thanks! The loop we did is a "classic" according to the ADK trail guide for the High Peaks. I was hesitant to go down the South side but Jeff encouraged me to go for it, so we did. There were some really icy sections where I would have been more comfortable wearing crampons but my snowshoes...

    Cascade, Porter & Colden: 1/4-1/5

Bah, Jeff is hardcore and has probably suffered worse injuries while hiking. He's accompanied me on my biggest outings and he's far more brave than I'll ever be.

Hey, man. Sounds like a plan. I do try to get up to the Adirondacks and New England but it's quite a haul. The Catskills are the closest "real" mountains but even they're 2 hours away. I've got some ambitious plans for up North this Spring and Summer so maybe then. A Dix Range traverse as...

    Cascade, Porter & Colden: 1/4-1/5

This was my first trip to the Adirondacks since my July Great Range traverse. My long time hiking friend, Jeff, accompanied me on the trip and we originally planned on doing Cascade & Porter on day one, followed by Giant and RPR on day two. However, after being defeated last winter by Mount...

Reflections on list finishing (Cats 35)

I'm glad that you placed the "Neversink Four" up there as one of your favorite hikes during your 35 journey. Definitely one of my favorites too.

    2009 Year in Preview...

Finish the Catskills 35. Presidential traverse. Pemi loop. Dix Range traverse. Hike my first Vermont 4k'ers. Continue chomping away at the ADK 46 and NE 115. Finish the NJ 1K'ers. Kittatinny Ridge thru-hike.

Panther Mountain via Giant Ledge - 12/30/08

Yeah, I'd say it was a little nerve wracking. My boots aren't waterproof anymore (the seams are tearing) so it was tough not stepping in the stream. Hmm! Sounds like a plan. Cavedog style? Thanks, Ralph. Sure was an awfully nice day. The view of the Devil's Path was most impressive at the...

Panther Mountain via Giant Ledge - 12/30/08

For weeks I had been anticipating a trip up to the Catskills with my longtime friend Jason. This would be his first time in the Catskills and I hoped that it would be a fun, memorable trip for him. We arrived at Woodland Valley just before 11 AM, hoping to arrive back at the car by 4 PM...
