A Finish but No End in Sight (H&F complete the 35)

No mondo traverse this time. Besides, Panther alone turned out to be an epic adventure. Brought my buddy from high school for his first hike in the Catskills. An 11 mile hike ended up taking 8 hours and we finished nearly 2 hours after sunset, with one headlamp, bushwhacking along a creek...

"At The Mercy of the Mountains"

It's pretty amazing how "recent" the first recorded ascents of some of the remote Adirondack peaks were. Mount Marcy was first climbed by Europeans in 1837, nearly 200 years after the first recorded ascent of Mount Washington.

    Adirondack High Peaks - Jan 2-4/Jan 4-6

Adirondack High Peaks: Jan 2-4/Jan 4-6 Hi all, I'm headed up to the High Peaks area for either the 2nd through the 4th or the 4th through the 6th depending on when I get off for work. I'll be based out of Keene Valley and will probably be doing some of the peaks nearby. I'm planning on...

Hikers find dead body in Harriman State Park

Kind of reminds me of an article I dug up from the NY Times archive from 1888: -- NY Times, Jan. 29, 1888. If any of you are familiar with the area, there is a Green Pond Mountain in New Jersey, that extends into New York as Bearfort Ridge and Bellvale Mountain, in Wawayanda State Park, Abram...

    Westkill 12-22

Very nice, Tom. Westkill is an especially nice "hill" in the Catskills. The decent climb from the western terminus of the DP, along with it's balsam capped summit and Buck Ridge lookout makes it one of my favorites. Buck Ridge Lookout last May:

A Lovely Christmas Hike on Jackson

Oh no! I know exactly how you feel. Though I'm not a fan of Red Bull, about a half liter of coffee is always necessary before trekking out into the woods. If the hike is long enough, I'll bring a thermos of it. :o Looks like a nice way to spend Christmas. :)

    Once in a lifetime visit

Faroe Islands. Rugged landscape like Iceland, in the middle of the Atlantic.

Hikers find dead body in Harriman State Park

Eeek! Creepy and sad at the same time. I'm supposed to do the S-BM this coming weekend. Maybe it's better I change plans...

    Great Range Traverse: 7/17 - 7/19

Winter round of the 46? Congrats to you! I'm going to head up to the High Peaks sometime in January to do some of the "low hanging fruit": Cascade, Porter, Giant, RPR, a few others maybe. Actually, since then, I've seen a whole lot of bears in Jersey. I saw a cub climbing a tree on Bowling...

    woodpecker breakfasting in Krumville

Very cool! Looks just like Woody. Once in a blue moon I'll hear a woodpecker pecking away at a tree in my neighborhood but I'm not sure if it's the same kind.

Hiking for Non-Hikers (Lake Maratanza Loop)

Give me some credit. I spent the first 10 years of my life without cable TV! :D Tony Danza was every kid's hero! Boy, do I feel bad for the reality TV generation...

    Suffern-Bear Mountain Traverse

But it's in the lame-n-tame lowlands! Pingyp should be exciting. Yeah, that works. I'll admit that 24 miles is a lot, especially this time of year. It makes the most sense to do the traverse on the Winter solstice. Nah, I'm kidding.

Hiking for Non-Hikers (Lake Maratanza Loop)

Yes, yes. The High Point monument is only 30 miles from Sam's Point and it is easily visible on a clear day. In fact, you can hike the Shawangunk Ridge Trail from Sam's Point to High Point. The TC has free maps online of the recently completed trail.

    Suffern-Bear Mountain Traverse

Yeah, that was the day I ditched the traverse for bushwhacking in the Catskills. Any interest in a 3rd S-BM patch? :D

    Suffern-Bear Mountain Traverse

Sabrina, The trail is about 24 miles long. Last Spring when I did the R-D, we did it in 10.5 hours and that trail is 2 miles longer.

    Storm King on Black Friday

Dunderberg is another great hike in the Hudson Highlands. The story of the spiral railway is pretty fascinating. Many of the trails on Dunderberg follow the old right-of-way. On the Ramapo-Dunderberg Trail you even get to hike on the ballast. Speaking of Dutch names in the Highlands, the...
