    Who is hiking this weekend?

Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Newark, NJ. :p No, seriously, I am. My hiking buddy offers historical walking tours of the city. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mount_Pleasant_Cemetery,_Newark

A Hike from NH to ME (and back!) - Deer Hills (23-Sep-2008)

The fungus you saw is Chicken of the Woods. It's supposedly edible.

    Friday (through Peekamoose) on Saturday

    Potato sack race! :D

    Friday (through Peekamoose) on Saturday

Yeah, right. How about we come up with a hike that will tire Jason out! I am reminded of the time when Jason, Jay and I did the R-D in Harriman. After hiking twenty-six miles, Jason gets into his car and nonchalantly says "time to head up to the Catskills now."

    Friday (through Peekamoose) on Saturday

Funny you mentioned that. A few days before the trip, I was glancing over the map and was wondering if it would be possible to incorporate Van Wyck and Woodhull into the trip. I wouldn't have done it though...

    Friday (through Peekamoose) on Saturday

Ralph, It was nice to meet you, a true Catskills legend. One of these days we'll have to do the BLM-Belleayre traverse: over 4800 feet of elevation gain. Not sure how many miles though.

    Friday (through Peekamoose) on Saturday

Here are the pics from the trip: http://www.flickr.com/photos/t3h_sw3d3/sets/72157607417091335/detail/ Halia and Flammeus, it was nice to meet you two, plus your two rough and tumble hiker dogs. The fatigue set in during the long drive back ta Joizy. I made it home in under two and a half...

    topoquest.com

I've found that Acme Mapper and MyTopo are two great alternatives to topozone. Both use topo overlays on Google maps.

    Frontpack?

I use a front pack for carrying my camera equipment and while the load balance is a noticeable improvement, sometimes it can get in the way during steep sections; you know, when the only way up a tough ledge with 50 lbs on your back is by doing the seal wuggle.

    Showers near Baxter State Park

The Big Moose Inn showers are available to non-patrons. I used their showers back in June and I was lucky enough to get the one that was "broken" (the timer was busted so the water never cut off). :D

    13 Maine 4k'ers: 8/30 - 9/03

Dude, lame. I might actually have respect for you if you hiked them all while playing "The Devil Went Down to Georgia" on the fiddle. Kind of like this: Just kidding. :p That's one heck of a trip right there. Much kudos to you!

    Approaching Slide from the Neversink

Alright, all. I can commit to the weekend of 9/20-21. The following weekend, I'll be bagging some Jersey peaks that are on private property because the owner is being gracious enough to let us on their land then. :D

    Are 3k's becoming trendy?

Don't worry, all. A special group of hikers, bushwhackers and peakbaggers are focusing on hiking New Jersey's humble 1K's. :D Unfortunately, as I have found while scouting out "newly discovered" 1K's, there are hardly any mountains with zero evidence of human contact.

    Dynamic Range (I think)

Some of the latest generation digital cameras have a high dynamic range mode. That is, individual pixels stop exposing as they approach being blown out. Not sure how good it is.

    Platte Clove Road Open?

Hi all, Just wondering if Platte Clove Road is open yet. Last time I heard, it was still closed, long after its proposed reopening.

    Approaching Slide from the Neversink

I too will keep the 9/20 - 9/21 weekend open, though, I may be busy doing a S-BM traverse. I'll have to see how things pan out as the date nears.

    Considering trying poles next time...

I've been using poles for over a year now and I nearly can't hike without 'em. They're like an extra set of legs!

    Approaching Slide from the Neversink

I'm still set on a Friday-BC-Rocky-Lone traverse, if anyone's up for it. :)

    unidentified tower?

Definitely High Point. From High Point and some parts of the Highlands, you can clearly make out specific Catskill mountains, so I'm assuming that the other way around is true.

    Black Fly Update

I was in the High Peaks area two weeks ago and the black flies were non-existent. :)
