    The Info on Mt. Cabot

Citation? I haven't heard of any efforts to designate the Kilkenny as Wilderness.

    Moat Mountain Hiker Rescue

Assuming this is the South-Middle Moat traverse (which would fit), book time is 5:45. I would expect even pretty fit teenagers from NYC to have a hard time going faster than book on this, unless they got out of the city quite a bit very regularly. 3 hours is getting into trail running territory...

    Backwards Weather pattern

My girlfriend was making the same observation as we were sitting outside watching thunderheads build...that we've been sitting in sort of a nor'easter pattern.

    Outdoor movie thread

That's how the list has been described, but it's not...it's a list of all Banff films from any year that are available for free, so it's not including everything from this year (the 2019 festival and 2020 tour). For instance, Brian's rec of Deer139 isn't on the list. Good stuff to watch...

ATC working on how to re-open the trail to thru hikers

Do you want the AT removed from Baxter, Lana? Because that's how you get the AT removed from Baxter.

    Hiker Death on Garfield

There's a fair bit of work on that relo now. I'm sure there are still some spots that get some mud but there's quite a bit of treadway hardening of various sorts. I was pretty surprised coming down it this weekend.

    Re-Openings

As I also posted in that group, the website (dated 12 June) doesn't list 13 Falls as closed but it's posted on-location. The closure order linked from that page is dated 21 May and lists 13 Falls as closed. They're really not making it easy to figure out what's going on.

    Hiker Death on Garfield

Yes, he and Laura had made arrangements for the recovery. Unfortunately there was a storm coming in sooner than originally forecast so they did send up a helicopter (contrary to what Guy probably would have wanted) to confirm the location before the team went in. (This is my recollection from...

    North Conway "Hiker" rescue

Not commenting on this one in particular, but I've read a lot of incident reports that made me think "well, he probably didn't get a second date." (It's usually he. The ones where a lady does some asking and planning don't seem to end that way.)

    Hiker Rescue - Franconia Notch

The trailhead steward program has also been suspended, losing that last opportunity for a little education. Not claiming it would have affected this case, but statistically it seems to have had an impact over the past couple of years.

    9 Circles of Hiker Hell

Mountaineers also say uphill. Apparently the Boy Scout manual used to say downhill has RoW but has since changed to uphill. Not that that's stopped the occasional scoutmaster who wanted to chew me out.

    9 Circles of Hiker Hell

Driving on the right side of the road is also arbitrary...some things are arbitrary but you really need a societal agreement. Clicking the quote button on IamKrzys's post isn't getting the quote in here, so I'll just say: uphill having RoW means that, when uphill is gassed and wants to take a...

Four Thousand Footer Committee / Grid: Peaks Will Not Count during COVID-19

Well, I've been wrong faster before, but not by much.

Four Thousand Footer Committee / Grid: Peaks Will Not Count during COVID-19

Grid is recognizing peaks now. 4000-footer committee is not. Your best bet is probably to watch their website http://www.amc4000footer.org/ and/or FB page. NH stay-at-home is currently set to expire on June 15; I probably wouldn't expect any change between now and then.

AMC Kills the Print Version of Outdoors Mag

I don't think fees dropped when Appalachia was removed as a membership benefit. I imagine they'll also still be developing a lot of the Outside material, just online. My guess (and hope) is it's pretty safe. There's a separate committee and an additional charge, which hopefully covers costs...

    AMC asking for donations

You can absolutely designate your gift. Call 'em up and ask for it to go to the trails budget, if that's where your heart is.

    AMC asking for donations

I found that weird. I did a week on trail crew for the Continental Divide Trail Association. Absolutely free out of pocket; they fed us. Cooks on site, hot breakfast and dinner, trail lunch. Absolutely fantastic. Even had a keg of beer onsite--the CDTA staffer had come down a couple of days...

AMC Huts closed for the duration of 2020!

Closed at least through 1 July. The AMC has been pretty good about sending out covid updates every couple of weeks and always updating at the same URL. They're also usually going far enough out that it's annoying if it's too pessimistic, but is good for planning.
