Watch the GPS or the Trail

The WMG maps used to include a few of the major ski trails, including Avalanche Brook. They removed them a few editions ago, which I think was a mistake. Mapmakers in general should mark junctions with "this used to be a major trail" or "this is a trail but you shouldn't take it" as they're very...

    Parking lots

To underline DayTrip's comment, NH is ticketing for parking along I-93, although it is sporadic. Sandwich Dome lot is usually plowed and looked it (barring stuff at the entrance) when I drove past a couple of weeks ago. I wouldn't want to try and get my Fit with all-seasons up into it, but...

    POLL: Your longest day?

R2R2R was 16. My notes have a presi traverse as about 17.5 (4:30a to 10p, IIRC; this was starting from Webster Cliff and doing all summits.)

The lost trail on the west ridge of Mt. Lincoln

Guy's book just lists "1897: Up Mt. Lincoln from the west" and the next map marks it as "Lost 1901-1910". Around this time the trail up Liberty was cut in 1901, "soon destroyed by lumbering," and restored 1903.

Winds were cranking early this morning.

Even down here it was fairly blustery NYD and nobody in New England can drive in any wind (plus I swear everybody out on the first was drunk.) In our previous location in mountainous New Mexico my girlfriend had to take a defensive driving course for work...they got to the "high wind" chapter...

    REI coming to North Conway

We'll see which actually opens first, this or the Bedford store. Of course they're still not managing to open one closer to me than Reading.

"Live" Rescue On Facebook: Hiker Lost On Lafayette

NH got text to 911 about three years ago and made a big push to publicise it. Details at bottom of this page. It does require service with your carrier (voice 911 requires service but you don't need to be on a tower with your carrier, just a compatible phone, that doesn't need a contract with...

Cog claims you need to pay to cross the tracks

The title is probably too conclusion-oriented, though. If a mod is willing to change it to "Cog requires permit for 'all users' of property" that would be appreciated. I couldn't think of appropriate phrasing.

Cog claims you need to pay to cross the tracks

If the Cog wanted to make it clear you can cross without paying, they could have stated that explicitly. If they wanted to make it clear that crossing was going to require a permit, they also could have stated that explicitly. What they've chosen to say is hiking on Cog property requires a...

Cog claims you need to pay to cross the tracks

The Cog is now selling a $10/day pass for any use of the railway property, including hiking on trails that cross the tracks.

    F&G activity around Twin Mountain/Route 3 today?

This storm is rain in Durham and heaps of snow in New Durham. It was supposed to bottom out at 41 here and actually hit 33, so the rain-snow line is probably a fair bit further south than forecast. Probably not going to make any difference in the mountains--hopefully everybody planning for this...

Big Changes in Avalanche Forcasting for Whites

More desk time and "crowdsourcing", less field work. Not sure I like that angle. The subtext is that usage is expanding across the range and needs support, and obviously they can't put the same effort into the ravines while increasing coverage with the same resources. Probably the best approach...

Staking A Tent In The Snow

I use the MSR blizzard stake (actually I have a mixed set of like three different brands). I tie pcord to the stakeout point on the tent, then loop it through two of the holes in the stake and connect up with a tautline hitch. Do this all before leaving home. When setting camp, I bury the stakes...

Winter Shelter Recommendations For Solo Hiker

They've been around for awhile but have been pushing more into the lightweight consumer backpacking realm in the last five years or so. Did a fair bit of military supplying, IIRC. Founder's a vet. Based here in Dover but there aren't a lot of operations here; warehousing seems to be in Nashua...

    Old Bridle Path or Greenleaf?

Not everybody checks the weather.... Alltrails is pretty unreliable. That number sounds like it might be the old trail before the Parkway was constructed. WMG has 3.8/3400' one-way (50' rev) for Greenleaf and 4.0/3550' one-way (50' rev) for OBP + Greenleaf to the summit. I do think Greenleaf...

Trying to come up with something good to say about Hancock Notch Trail in summer

It was pretty hellacious on snowshoes this past February. Hard to follow, trail often in a trench, and the sidehill was really scary. Obviously this winter was abnormal with the frequent thaws but it was quite the adventure.

    Two way radios..

Reasonable options are ham or FRS. Ham requires a license but it's not that hard to get; the problem is that of course then everybody needing to use a radio needs a license. Performance in the Whites is pretty good because there are some well-positioned repeaters. Last I checked some of the...

State to offer Shuttle Service from the Artist's Bluff lot to Lafayette Place

This is the second place I've seen this described as from the "tram" lot. It is not; it's the Artist's Bluff parking off 18, next exit north. I'm not sure why it's picking up that description as the PR seems pretty clear.

State to study Mt Washington Summit Capacity

The FAQ says to bring your registration if the fee collection point isn't in the parking lot. It also says the plate provides access for "the registered vehicle and its passengers," i.e. you can't show up in somebody else's car. So those two point in different directions.
