    Hiking With Diabetes

IMO she should figure that out before doing the same thing hours away from definitive medical care. The fact that she's held up well on 3-4 hour hikes is a good thing but how closely has she been monitoring her levels? There's a lot missing from your query, including whether she has type 1 or...

    Mt Equinox in Vermont

jfb linked the traditional approach from the east. When I was there, paper copies of the map were available at the trailhead but I had already sent in a couple of bucks to get one in the mail. It's a lovely area to wander in and the blue trail is very easy until just above the last junction...

    Thursday Snowshoe up Gap Mountain?

That would have to be a New England list so it adds up to 100 with the 4ks...

    Improving Hike Safe Card

Linking to donation pages that I'm aware of for some of those organizations. I finally gave up on the hikeSafe card really making sense and chose to view it, like Raven, as a means of support. But I also choose to give directly to some of the volunteer organizations.

Big difference in snow totals from last weeks storm

This most recent round of shoveling was a lot heavier stuff than the first round.

Big difference in snow totals from last weeks storm

Snow Water Equivalent Started out pretty fluffy here and looks to be staying that way, which isn't good for visibility. I expect this weekend is going to be a tough one for foot travel and I'm probably not going to finish the 48. Unless a bunch of people here really want to do an Zealand-Bonds...

Top Ten Worst Small Towns in NH!

They're using those as "nobody wants to live there" proxies. Which is how Lincoln winds up as #1, since the land area is enormous and the settled area is quite small. By that criterion, Harts Location is a more desirable place to live, simply from small land area.

FOUND: Compass and whistle on Kilkenny Ridge Trail (Cabot)

Yard sale on Cabot today. Found a compass and whistle on the Kilkenny Ridge trail, around 3500' heading up Cabot. PM or email me a description and I'll get it back to you. I use gmail and my username there is jtniehof (like here, but with my middle initial.)

FOUND: Hat on Kilkenny Ridge Trail

Found a hat on the Kilkenny Ridge trail, around 3500' heading up Cabot. Looks like it had been embedded in the monorail and melted out. PM or email me a description and I'll get it back to you (I'm going to wash it first). I use gmail and my username there is jtniehof (like here, but with my...

FOUND: Hats on Bunnell Notch trail

Found two hats inside of each other on the Bunnell Notch trail, just up from the junction with the York Pond trail. Looks like they had been embedded in the monorail and melted out. PM or email me a description and I'll get it back to you (I'm going to wash it first). I use gmail and my username...

Anyone going hiking during the heat wave?

I'm thinking Cabot. Hopefully York Pond Road will thaw out so I can get to the dang trailhead. Will wear the powder shoes and smooth out the slush a bit.

    Some Twin Mtn Area Observations

Part of the problem is, I've never actually walked up to an open business in Twin Mountain. After the first few times of finding a locked door with no hours or "out of business" sign posted, I just took for granted there wasn't any functional business and stopped even trying.

    Compass Recommendation

My math could be off, but that means he was claiming to be able to tell the position of a star to 5mas with the naked eye. Hubble's resolution is about 50 mas. Nonsense doesn't begin.

HELP! Winter Day Hike Nutrition (FOOD)

Ha. We always did pie filling in two pieces of bread with the "tonka toaster" in the fire. Brings back memories. I try to lean more towards "real food" stuff I make myself but some prepared stuff is awful convenient. You're right that it's smart to distinguish between "caloric but I'm burning...

HELP! Winter Day Hike Nutrition (FOOD)

You're "lucky" I'm home sick and have no attention span, so I'm finally going to bang out my list. Grocery store chewy granola bars Clif bars. Sometimes I remember to cut them up first. Sometimes not. Those packs of crackers with cheese in between. Tend to crumble so eat early in the day...

Hale Fire Road Access - Little River Road Winter Access Twins and Hale

Do you have anything to support the supposition that the person who posted Private Property is the same who posted Trail? Sounds to me like the trail sign is on the property of the people who own the bridge, who want people to turn off there (not continue up their driveway), and the private...

    Do things suck up north?

Yeah, I started maybe 8:20, so we probably overlapped. It wasn't too bad on Madison; when I got to the little bit where Osgood is just below the ridge, it was sheltered from the wind and had good sun, so I hung out and took some pictures for a bit. Welcome to Views!

    Do things suck up north?

Can't help you much; the guy I talked with both directions was Valley Way up and down. Somebody else started from the parking lot at the same time as me and was going to go up Airline to Adams, but I didn't see 'em after. Pretty much nothing forking off Airline (EDIT: Valley Way. Not Airline. I...

    Do things suck up north?

I did Madison on 1/14; it was almost completely dry and I bumped into somebody on the way up and down who'd done Adams as well, said it was much the same. Eisenhower on 1/15 was a river of ice.

HELP! Winter Day Hike Nutrition (FOOD)

Make in a thermos in advance, with the total amount of water in boiling form. It usually calls for something like 1c boiling water followed by 1c cold water...just do it all boiling. It doesn't start to set up until lower than room temperature and even then it's not a choking hazard: people do...
