NWS Gray Radar down this weekend

Thanks for the heads-up...I imagine it's going to substantially impact short-term warnings around here, and I'd missed it. It's there in the "news headlines" on my forecast but I've been trained to ignore that section since it has stuff like "we have a webcam!"

Sunday River WhiteCap (Maine) Day Hike Route

Phew, you had me worried there for a moment. I don't get by there often but whenever somebody talks about doing Old Speck I tell them to be sure to hit the stand.

    Mount Cabot from Millbrook rd?

I did the Mill Brook Road approach the first time I did Cabot and absolutely loved it. It is much, much nicer than the direct Bunnell Notch approach; the Unknown Pond portion of the Bunnell Notch-Unknown Pond loop over the Bulge and the Horn is similarly nice. We had no problem getting a Focus...

    True Summit Of Mt Davis

There isn't a trail. There are often herd paths visible from the south summit over towards the true summit, but I've never had time to 'whack through. I asked around here at one point and the 'whack from Davis down to the old shelter location is apparently thick but doable.

Jewell Trail starting at the Cog Railroad.

The bridge over the Ammonoosuc at the Cog was taken out by Irene; it's mentioned in the 29th WMG. I don't know if they rebuilt in the interim but it was gone in fall of '15 and several subsequent times I've been there. The WMG describes a route around that the Cog has now marked closed. (This...

    Cohos Trail

Aside: Gunstock/Belknap from the lower lot doesn't really add that much (although for squeezing in an evening hike, it can certainly make a difference.) Note also Belknap Mountain Road is closed for a short section right now--you have to take Hoyt Road in (fairly typical for those coming from...

Fuel vendors east of Salt Lake?

I wound up just leaving SLC later and hitting REI on the way out. There is a Walmart in Evanston; do they actually carry backpacker canisters, not the Coleman propane ones? Website has Coleman-branded butane/propane mix but listed as out of stock online and not available for store pickup (the...

    Hotel on Mt Washington??!!

The Spaulding has always run from the Greenland/Portsmouth line to Milton; moving 16 onto it (redesignating old 16 as unsigned 16B/108/125) is indeed more recent. I don't think there's any plan to extend the Turnpike designation (and tolling) north of Strafford County. The Rochester expansion...

    Cohos Trail

Your best bet for a shuttle would probably be Trail Angels or the Rattle River Hostel as both are more north country oriented.

Mass. man drowns in Franconia Brook

Right where Backpacker suggests swimming with kids! Not the first. Hopefully the last but it doesn't seem likely.

    A Thread About Favorite Mountains!

I'm terrible with "favorites" but I'm very excited to be heading back to the Uintas. I was at a conference in Heber City about twelve years ago and popped over to do the Lakes loop and have been planning to go back ever since. The Highline trail is a pretty popular through-run that's on my...

Fuel vendors east of Salt Lake?

I realize it's way OT on this site but the only Uintas forum I've found appears dead. I'm flying into Salt Lake late (9pm) and want to out towards the trailhead early. I need to pick up a fuel canister and matches beforehand. The REI in Salt Lake doesn't open until 9am and the furthest east I...

    Basin Bushwhack to Liberty Springs

Every time I look for an obvious landmark and every time I'm foiled. Now I know where it is by "feel." Very roughly: it's a reasonably flat section, there's a brook smack up against the left side of the path (southbound), in the middle of an S curve, a few culverts. Basically it's pretty...

LOST: gaiters, Downes Brook TH, NH

Yes, it was a busy weekend for me...somehow my Dirty Girl gaiters, pattern Spacin' Out, disappeared in the parking lot for Downes Brook/UNH trail. If anybody found them, please drop me a line. My email's with gmail and my username there is jtniehof.

LOST: Folding saw, Rocky Branch or Isolation Trail, NH

Lost a Fiskars folding saw somewhere between the Rocky Branch trailhead (off 16) and the Isolation spur. Went back in the woods for a bit so it might be hanging around weird environs of Engine Hill. If you happen to come across it, drop me a line. My email's with gmail and my username there is...

FOUND: Nalgene, Rocky Branch Trail, NH

Found a Nalgene back in the woods a bit from the Rocky Branch Trail, maybe a mile in from the parking lot. Folks who found it thought it might have been there awhile. If you might have lost it, care about it enough to want to arrange ship or pickup, and can provide some description, drop me a...

    Direttissima in Backpacker magazine

I've given up on BP being remotely reasonable about the Northeast. In the June issue they recommend taking kids to stay at the Franconia Brook campsite and then go swimming by Franconia Falls, not mentioning there's a river crossing in between. Two chances to drown!

Questions about hiking Jefferson and Adams

The WMG specifically notes that taking the Cornice from Edmands to Caps to avoid reclimbing Jefferson is unlikely to save time. Between Castle and Israel Ridge, I didn't find it any worse than the average trail in the northern Presis but was pretty happy to reach Israel Ridge. I wouldn't...

    Lonesome Lake Trail Closure

Yes, and it's more like six weeks. I came down it Sunday and it's definitely eroding out in the upper sections, starting to look like the Brook trail on Major. Needs the work. Those unfamiliar who might be lurking should be aware that Hi-Cannon is a much rougher trail and they should be...

    Alpine Garden

This coming Saturday is the road race, so it'll be pretty quiet until about noon when the cars transporting the finishers head down. Around 1:30 is when the frustrated motorcyclists will start tearing up the road. The summit will be pretty crowded though. I think priority for summit photos...
