Why do you (or don't you) hile solo?

After finishing my first round of the 48 I repeated them in winter and solo. I would be hard pressed to say which I enjoyed more.

Books by women or about women

I recently finished, “When Women and Mountains Meet” (Julie Boardman, 2001). I picked it up earlier this year and finally got around to reading it. It was truly enjoyable not just for the nice collection of accounts of women who are a part of White Mountain history but also for the rich...

LRTC offers patch for hiking in Ossipees

I assume the photo is the one printed on page 3 in The Legacy (reprinted from Lucy Larcom’s account that was published in the “New England Magazine” in 1892). I took several photos to try to capture the rock as it sits now (the brighter one in the background).

    Grant Rd Trailhead

Last I knew there is still no access from Grant Road. Access from Glidden Road (road to east of Grant) has no good parking area and had a gate part way in the trail that I was told wasn’t meant to keep hikers out but 4-wheelers. If you go in Bickford Road (west of Grant Road) and turn left on...

Southwest Twin - words of Wisdom solicited.

I did it from the west, and though a long day I don't recall it being too bad except for an area of extensive blowdown.

    Early Mountain Summit Houses

1882 – snips of a letter from Isabella Stone (book = Mountain Summers): “Can you believe I have actually made the ascent of Lafayette?... We hired two horses and the head guide, mounted at the entrance of the bridle path in scientific manner by springing into our saddles from the ground with...

Full Throttle in the Crescent Range (19-Sep-2009)

"Walks in the woods" is even better on snowshoes. It's a lovely area after fresh snowfall - and even a few more views. :)

    Vermont Monadnock

You may or may not have looked at my report for last year. Although I have been in the area recently I was not on that trail. Combining the hike with Magalloway and/or the ride to the border and short hike to Fourth Conn. Lake and the side trip on Rt.145 to see the Falls makes for a very...

Does "Inserted Images" in Trip Reports bother you ?

For me, personally, I don’t read too many trip reports these days and that’s where most pictures or links are (I think). If I have the time and look at a few reports it’s usually to see the pictures just as much as to read. But if I click on one that requires scrolling to read I stop right...
