Hiker missing in Franconia Notch area

The headline is the same but the story has changed to a missing man who went fishing near one of the trailheads. (Union Leader comments are typical -but oops!)

Time for the 2009 Spring/Summer Flower Thread

This bud on the left was taken on a previous April (end of month) and I hope to find it again but this time see what the flower is. Any ideas?

Time for the 2009 Spring/Summer Flower Thread

Some mystery buds I'll have to go back and check out (for size and up close) Edited to add that these are Indian Poke shoots (aka False Hellebore)

Time for the 2009 Spring/Summer Flower Thread

Some trails are a bounty of beauty as was today's: Hepatica (buds, purple, white, and numerous clusters) Purple Trillium Early Saxifrage Yellow Violet Trailing Arbutus (pink and white) Silverling (starting to green up and with last year flower) Some buds (Clintonia most likely)

    Softshell conclusion-years later

I was one of the skeptics when soft shell became a word but was willing to check them out. After trying and returning a few I was losing interest until I found one that fit and looked nice (and the price was great) at LL Bean. It had pit zips and resisted water quite well and was warm enough for...

    Hiking Skirts

follow up I’m in love!! I’ve had the pleasure of giving the skirts a try (I found second shorter one in TJ Maxx). I’ve been running, scrambling up slopes, off trail, trail work, in the wind and just la-de-da hiking. I can’t say which one I like over the other but I definitely see the benefit...

Do I Look Like An Idiot?

Most of these I’ve heard more than once: Coming off the trail: “Did you go to the top?” “Yes.” “Good for you.” Near the summit: “You’re going to need a coat if you go up there.” On the trail: “Why aren’t you wearing gloves? It’s really cold today.” Looking at my trail runners: “You can hike in...

Do I Look Like An Idiot?

No argument from me. I definitely agree. I'm a woman...I must be an idiot. I'm hiking alone...idiot. I'm running...recipe for disaster. :D And now I'm wearing a skirt...do I look like an idiot yet? Favorite question (as I hiked with a shovel out after a bit of muddy trailwork ), "Did you just...

Not in my back yard? Snow?

This could be a thread about my back yard, and even though there are still patches of snow, it is almost gone. This could be a thread for ski areas that try to remind people there’s snow on the slopes. But this is a thread for those planning to hike and forget that it’s still very much winter...

The best hike I ever did......

I lost a younger sister without the opportunity to say goodbye. May you treasure your moments together even to the end.

historic Banana Trail on Mt Shaw?

I may have found my own answer. Camp Merrowvista has been operational since 1924, and with the nature of the blazes (banana, gorilla, and thunderbird) it seem likely a camp endeavor.

historic Banana Trail on Mt Shaw?

According to older AMC guides that listed these trails the Thunderbird trail had yellow thunderbirds. But I know little more than that. I would be very interested in knowing when these trails were cut and by whom. They are listed as far back as 1969 (?) in the AMC guides. Earlier than that I...

    VFTT peak list

Thank you, nartreb, for the photos of Cardigan. I'm taking it off the list. I was on Carter Dome in a deep snow, and while I recall a view it wasn't a 360. Perhaps someone has some pictures?

    VFTT peak list

If the summit is naturally elevated by snow (not man-made pile) and you get a 360 that is a bonus peak because often the open summits don’t accumulate much buildup due to wind. Obviously they can’t be listed as each winter may be different thus unpredictable. You’ll have to post your pictures...
