VFTT Shirts - which design do you like?

If you can't wear it - stuff it. :D Literally, fill it with pillow stuffing and sew up the arms, waist, and neck and keep it in your car. Make a balloon head to attach and leave in the driver's seat when your hiking or another spot when your driving. :p

Intoxicated or unprepared will pay for rescue or lose license

I like the sentence near the end: "The backcountry is a world with rules of its own, enforced by nature itself."

Trail Bandit Ossipee Mountains (NH) Map - 1st Edition (2009)

I have posted this before but to repeat regarding snowmobiles - they have access through the Castle property on the Shannon Brook trail, Turtleback Mt. trail and the High Ridge trail portion between Turtleback trail and Mt. Shaw. All other trails on the Castle property are off limits to...

Trail Bandit Ossipee Mountains (NH) Map - 1st Edition (2009)

I personally think it makes it more confusing. The AMC and Map Adventures maps use red for trails and it seems to work even in busy areas like the Sandwich Range or trails out of or around Appalachia. I agree. One I understand is called 'Ledgewood Cliff' which is the viewpoint side trail off...

Trail Bandit Ossipee Mountains (NH) Map - 1st Edition (2009)

I took a quick look at this version. Very nice. I’m not too fond of all the colors though. I’ll look at it more later on as I have time. Just to update - I recently met and talked to the new Castle trails property adopter and was told that they received funding to do a new map ‘AMC style’...

Bolles Trail, nice ledges, lynx tracks?

I didn’t see this mentioned. One way to help distinguish cat (felidae) and dog (canidae) from weasel (mustelidae) [fisher is in the weasel family] is the number of toes. Cat and dog is four, weasel is five. Also a print in the snow can be larger looking depending on the snow condition and length...

    Zealand/Bonds Traverse, 12/29/2008

I don't know if I feel old, jealous, or just need a second cup of coffee. I think I'm going for my coffee now and ponder the yonder. Very nice report!

    Liberty and Flume 12/26/2008

We obviously followed shortly behind 'til Liberty where we met up with NH_Mtn_Hiker and peakbagger as they were just leaving the summit. Liberty was our plan for the day. Aaron? was on the summit waiting for his family to return from Flume. I left my 'hello' with him. We were back in the parking...

    forced to bareboot by MSRs

My Atlas 1225's seem to handle just about anything that winter and winter hikers throw at me. :)

    Liberty and Flume 12/26/2008

It was nice to see NH_Mtn_Hiker and Peakbagr (actually "peakbagger") again and taste the famed 'Peter Miller brownies'. I sent my hello to the rest over from Liberty. There were cars in the lot but an unbroken Whitehouse Trail :(. We broke it out hoping not to have to do the same on Liberty...

Various trails on Mt. Major (Belknap Range)

Date of Hike: Dec. 22 and 23 Trail Conditions: Nice deep powder. Some trails tracked with snowshoes but there are those pesky postholers . Special Equipment Required: Snowshoes (please) Comments: Usually I get a warm up for trailbreaking with my snowshoes. Not this time. It went...

    Grivel G10 or Microspikes?

You have to understand what your ‘needs’ are. Not just a 4K or something smaller but a need to summit whatever you are hiking or are you satisfied to turn around and adjust your goal for the day. A week ago I ‘needed’ crampons to summit Mt. Major (1786’), but didn’t have them with me (had...

    Ice Storm Trail Clean Up

As posted in the 'social group': As of today (Tues 12/16) the trails around Major are in good shape regarding any ice storm damage. Most trails have now been walked and the debris cleared. A lot of melting went on yesterday but the trails still have plenty of ice cover so traction is highly...

    Large winter storm coming

I’m just returning from the ‘dark side’. We lost power overnight Thurs/Fri.am and got it back briefly this afternoon (Mon) before losing it for a couple more short spurts. Life here in the Farmington highlands was like a war-zone to drive the roads with wires and trees everywhere. Fortunately we...

Nice or Necessary for winter hiking

With winter fast approaching it might be nice to share some tips on what you do to make the hiking more enjoyable and perhaps safer. Some thoughts to start: Lip balm: It keeps the lips from drying out, getting sunburn (if you use a sun-block lip balm) and I just like it. I sometimes put some...

    Bears in Whites

Ahhh, Brutus…summer of ’95…the bear who came for dinner. I wrote an account on the AMC’s Hiker Journal but the posts only goes back to the time of registration (2002). But I keep a journal and it is fun to go back and see what I saved: Postings on Hiker Journal 3/1/00 The following message was...

Previously on Lost - in the Belknaps?

I wasn’t going to respond because I’m sure Roy can get himself out of difficult situations but as I had previously stated, “these suggestions are for anyone reading this thread.” I stand by what I originally posted that his suggestions are outdated and dangerous. I made no reference to LNT...
