Post- Irene trail work on the Osseo/ Mt Flume / Lincoln Woods

Today my wife & I were able to get out to the Osseo Trail to check out damages and make repairs. Amazingly the trail held up very well! We opened up several waterbars and removed blowdowns all the way up to the top of the ladders. We didn't have enough daylight to summit Flume :( All in all...

New Slides in the White Mountains

Bonds, Guyot, & Twins My wife & I were out in the Pemi today doing trail work on the Osseo. We made it up to the top of the ladders where we could get a good look out to the head of the Pemi wilderness- the Twins, Guyot, & the Bonds. I only got a poor quality cell phone pic (I didn't pack my...

White Mountain National Forest Open as of Tuesday 8/30/2011

Pemi My wife & I are headed into the Pemi tomorrow to the Osseo Trail (our adopted trail) up the east side of Mt Flume to check out storm damages and try to take care of any eroison or windfalls. We'll try to post a report tomorrow night. Hopefully damages aren't too bad- over here in Vermont...

What does VFTT mean to you?

VFTT has given me the opportunity to be closely associated with the New England & New York hiking community and the trails and mountains and backcountry gems that we are all very passionate about... I've really enjoyed the up to date trail info and meeting- both in person and via the forum here-...

11 types of people you meet on a hike

Lol, that's awesome :) As trail maintainers in the Pemi Wilderness, FisherCat and I have seen it all and we shake our heads in humor or disbelief every time....

    Ice Farming???

Tip, you may want to bury your feed line (black plastic water pipe?) with some hay to prevent a major freeze up during super cold spells- it will put your line out of commission all winter. Otherwise, if the water source / spring runs reliably all winter, just let it run diverted off to the side...

    Tubbs Repair?

Been a hard core Tubb's user and abuser for decades, usually only get two years out of their top of the line model before i deem 'em unworthy for serious backcountry (work) usage. Really stinks that no one local fixes them, but i have yet to pay for any repairs or upgrades by having them sent to...

    Dickey & Welch

Sunday Pam and I finally got around to hiking Dickey & Welch mountains- we were truely amazed with how open and awesome this area truely is! We arrived to a full lot at noon and opted to hike clockwise (Dickey first) as the masses seemed to be headed towards Welch first as the guidebook...

Identity Crisis Solved, A Historical Trek Up East Osceola

Great essay and awesome pics FisherCat! Sorry we couldn't do the trek with you and KlutzyCat, but we did have a great time doing everything else...perhaps the next period trek? Again, great words and history! You have to post the musket shot & tree pic, that's my favorite though i understand why...

Advice for a New Englander moving to Utah

Wow, who would choose to leave the new england mountains? Just kidding... My time exploring SW Utah a few years back was awesome (Including Zion, Bryce, Vermillion Castles, Cedar Breaks... not to mention Nevada desert)!!! It was my first time, and as an avid new england hiker/bushwhacker- i was...

    Osseo, Mt Flume

On Sunday (8/8) i struck out to take care of some previous summer storm damage on the Osseo trail- a hearty thank you to the mystery person who had a small handsaw and removed some blowdown debris from the trail! Took care of all remaining blowdown damage, opened some clogged waterbars, and...

Stupid Scree Wall on Mt. Bond

Right on Dr. Wu! This really makes me mad: As the co-adopter of a trail for 3 years (Osseo on Flume), we were required to take an AMC skills session to "qualify" as a Trail Adopter, a responsibilty that i love to take care of. However, it was drilled into us that we need to RESPECT the mountain...

    Mount Mansfield Loop, 7/17/2010

Glad you had a good hike, too bad no views tho- the summit & Ridgeline is an awesome place to be on a clear day, even more so without the auto road crowd!!! I often felt it parallels the Franconia Ridgeline if somewhat less dramatic (too much development on the east side). Just the other day I...
