    Joshua Tree National Park?

We're heading there next month and we have the maps, books, etc but wanted to see if anybody had recommendations on their must sees there. We'll be camping in the park for three nights. This is probably a long shot, but if you've been to the Channel Islands, would love to hear about your...

    Day pack suggestions (May-Oct)

I use the Golite Ion. I think mine weighs 9 ounces. It is just a sack with two shoulder straps on it. It has worked very well for me, but I don't carry alot of stuff on hikes.

Saw your note about the picture -- the tall peak is Assiniboine. :)

    Your favorite photos of 2009

Great pics so far! I'll have to check back -- I love these threads every year. Picking nine would be tough, so for now I'll go with my favorite picture of the year (disclaimer: Steve actually took it, we only have one camera, but I was there :P). The view from Nub Peak in Assiniboine...

    MAGIC the gathering IV

Unfortunately, we only have a little charcoal bbq grill (we have a propane Coleman stove). We don't have a canopy either, but I think Brad might have one. I can ask if we can borrow it.

    MAGIC the gathering IV

We're planning on coming, but taking it easy this weekend. We'll arrive some time Saturday for the potluck and camping and will do an easier hike on Sunday. I was hoping to see the other thread to see what was needed for the potluck ... we're still not sure what we are bringing.

125 miles hiking, 17 nights camping, 10 bears, 5 stitches, and 1 street urchin

lol @ J. Dub. Cute pic. :) Thank you everybody for the kind comments. :) So far Norah loves the outdoors and we hope to keep that love going!

Right now, we're planning on it (barring any horrible weather)!

125 miles hiking, 17 nights camping, 10 bears, 5 stitches, and 1 street urchin

Nice trip report and pictures! I had to look it up, but we hiked it on 8/16. Since we had Norah with us, we beat a retreat once it started to rain hard/hail. We were totally peeved that when we got back to the lake the pass was sunny with blue skies. :p Most of the climbers we saw had flown...

125 miles hiking, 17 nights camping, 10 bears, 5 stitches, and 1 street urchin

We hiked to Bourgeau Lake, but the got rained/hailed out on the way to Harvey Pass. We met several people who had recently climbed Mt Bourgeau and it sounds like a great hike. Next time. :) Mt. Assiniboine is supposed to be a great climb. Steve was looking longingly at it. :)

125 miles hiking, 17 nights camping, 10 bears, 5 stitches, and 1 street urchin

Or, what we did on our summer vacation. :) We had the opportunity to take a month off and decided to split our time between Montana (Yellowstone, Beartooth Wilderness, Glacier National Park) and the Canadian Rockies (Banff, Yoho, and Mt. Assiniboine Parks). While planning a month long...

    MAGIC the gathering IV

If we make it for the gathering, I doubt we'll be doing the traverse (I'm the weak link here, lol). So we would potentially be up for another hike as well.

    MAGIC the gathering IV

We're interested, although with a wee one we're more weather dependent (and we are planning on the ADKs one weekend, not sure which one yet). Will update closer to the weekend!

    Baby on their backs

I agree with what Trish has said on this thread. Starbug, we didn't start hiking with Norah until she was ~ 5 months old. Although I used a basic sling for walks, we used an Ergo carrier while hiking (my husband carries her 99% of the time). We still use it (she's ~ 21 months now). As for...

    Baby on their backs

Well, if you were to see my family on the trail, you would probably be  too. :p We've taken our daughter on a lot of hikes -- we started when she was ~ 5 months old (she's ~ 21 months old now). My husband carries her and I have utmost confidence and trust in him. She loves being...

    Tour du mont blanc

Terrific set of pictures! I was just thinking "they had great weather" when I got to the snowstorm pictures. :p Loved the pic of the ibex on the rock. Brought back some nice memories -- we did the TMB for our honeymoon. Glad you had a great trek!

    Chamonix-Mont Blanc Massif: June 2009

Great report and amazing pics! Awesome job on the crevasse rescue and don't feel bad about making the call to turn around. Making it safely off the mountain is always an accomplishment. I was a little  at some of your descriptions of the other climbers. Like you need anything else to...

    Child carrier security question

Weatherman, Norah does sit a lot lower in the Ergo. Balance hasn't been an issue at all for Steve. We've done some pretty steep hikes with her (probably the steepest was OJI in Baxter) and it was never a problem. I imagine the Kelty will work fine too, although he will have to get used to a...

    Child carrier security question

Our daughter had very good head control and could sit unassisted around five months or so. We had tried a Kelty frame carrier and she rode in it okay, but we ended up getting an Ergo carrier that we still use (she's 19 months now and around 24 pounds). We like the Ergo because it's so much...

Lost back country skier sues SAR for taking too long

What's sad is that if the lost skiers had stayed put, they would've been found. Other skiers saw the "SOS" and reported it according to one of the articles .... so if the "SOS" was found, they would've been too. But I do agree the "SOS" should've been investigated. I think mistakes were made...
