    Yellowstone

Thank you everybody. Such an interesting and beautiful park - fun to take pictures there. :)

    Yellowstone

During our two week trip in MT/WY we were in and out of Yellowstone. The first week we spent in a cabin in Cooke City (I posted that part of the trip here), five miles from the northeast entrance of Yellowstone and could easily pop into Lamar Valley in the evenings to watch for wildlife and...

    The Beartooth Mountains

Love your avatar! Crazy snow! Glad it worked out for you with camping. Beautiful part of the country. :)

    The Beartooth Mountains

Thank you Billy. I've enjoyed yours as well! Ha ha - well, lady luck has been on our side for many of our vacations in regards to rain, although there have been some notable exceptions. :p

    Weminuche Wilderness Area

Steve spent a week there a few years ago. All I know is he rode some train and a mountain goat ate the strap off his trekking pole and part of his hat. Send him a pm (halfmoon) and he can tell you more. Here's the pics from his trip: Weminuche Wilderness

    The Beartooth Mountains

I was thinking the same. I guess years like this are good to have to help replenish the dwindling snow fields and glaciers!

    The Beartooth Mountains

This August we made our third annual trip to Cooke City, MT to rendezvous with my parents. Cooke City is nestled in the Beartooth Mtns near the MT/WY border, five miles from the northeast entrance of Yellowstone. It's a perfect base for fishing, hiking, exploring Yellowstone, wildlife watching...

Brown Bear attacks group of teens in Alaska

As I understand it, a group is not just for size to deter an attack, it's also for the noise you make (talking) to prevent surprising a bear. If they were crossing a stream, perhaps the bear did not hear them that well and they surprised it. How scary. I hope they all recover. It's definitely...

    Lofoten Islands - Norway - May 2011

Wow. Beautiful pictures! Looks like it was an awesome trip.

Another Yellowstone grizzly attack, different outcome

I've also run across people who believe in carrying the air horns (I think in addition to bear spray), but I haven't read much about their effectiveness. Anybody know? Last year a few days before we left on our vacation to the Beartooth Mountains, the grizzly had killed the man in the...

Another Yellowstone grizzly attack, different outcome

There are trails in the Canadian Rockies where they impose a group size minimum. One year I think it was a group of six and the last time we were there it was a group of four (tight group of four, expected to stick together on the trail).

Another Yellowstone grizzly attack, different outcome

There was an incident in the Catskills maybe eight years ago where a black bear snatched a baby from a stroller and killed it. I'll see if I can find an article. Rare, but it happened. ETA: Here's a link to one of the articles Catskills bear attack

Baby Backpack Recommendations for the Trail

I think it's personal preference. I find my balance much better with baby on the back (for hiking at least, just walking around, in front was fine). Steve actually did slip and fall once with her on his back. He caught himself on a sharp rock and had to get five stitches. Norah was sleeping and...

Baby Backpack Recommendations for the Trail

Ah, did not realize there was a backpack or sunshade attachment. Sounds like a good item to have. Is that newer or did we just overlook it I wonder. At least neither have been issues for us as there is always another person to carry a backpack and we aren't in full sun that much (a hat and...

Baby Backpack Recommendations for the Trail

Most people use frame carriers, but what's worked best for us is the Ergo carrier. We started hiking with Norah when she was five months old and we still use the Ergo (she's 3.5 years old now). We've logged hundreds of miles on the trail with her and it's been an awesome carrier for us...

    Rhinebeck NY

Agree with Ferncliff. Nice spot. If you are looking for a trailrun, there are some good trails in Hyde Park (Steve regularly runs there, he can give more details if you want to do a run). This isn't a hike, but Burger Hill outside of Rhinebeck is a nice spot in the evening for sunset.

Mountain Lion killed in CT was domestic

You'd be surprised at what idiots will do. We visited a small animal sanctuary in Red Lodge, MT that was mostly injured or abandoned animals. Each animal had a little sign telling where they had come from and I was surprised at how many were animals people had at home (deer, bobcats, wolves)...

It's time for a family tent...

15 lbs seems like an awful lot to carry until your kid is old enough to hike/backpack on his own (and even then that is really heavy!). We did our first backpacking trip with our daughter last summer (she was 2.5). She couldn't do the full hike on her own and because I had to carry her, Steve...

    Where to camp/hike in Baxter...?

We did the Traveler Loop a few years ago and it's one of my favorite hikes in the northeast. It's around 10.5 miles with over 3500 feet elevation gain. I remember a big climb at the beginning that we took care with (some loose rock), but overall I didn't think it was too bad (we took our time...

    Biggest "nature" let down?

I agree with the above posters. I don't think I've ever been let down by nature - just the people who mismanage it. Along those lines my let down was Havasu Falls. Maybe my expectations were too high or we picked a bad time go, but I was disappointed in the blatant disregard for the land (by...
