Lost back country skier sues SAR for taking too long

While I feel badly for the husband and see how mistakes were made by SAR, I don't agree with the legal case.

Hiker dies from Half Dome fall

Very sad. :( FYI, there's more details about the accident here for those interested (not an official account, but info from people who were also on the cables at the time): http://planetrambler.com/150mph/news/_accidentonhalfdome.html Besides the normal difficulty of the climb and the wet...

Don't have a hiking dog? How 'bout a cat?

:D We once met a couple in Utah in an outdoors store with a cat on a leash, but never anyone on the trail. I would love to see a cat on the trail. :) I'm amused thinking about the possibility of putting our cats on a leash. I suspect they wouldn't be too keen on the idea. :p

Inappropriate Comments in a Maine Cannister

Was it done maliciously or as a joke? Either way, it doesn't belong in a canister. *thumbs down*

    Gathering 10.0 - Canadian Rockies

Just wanted to add info about Lake O'Hara. We called the first day we could (we had a two week window in the end of August and you can call three months in advance) and it took us about 45 minutes to get through and there was nothing available (not surprising given that was for a weekend). We...

    Gathering 10.0 - Canadian Rockies

Turns out we're going to be in the Canadian Rockies, but not until the last two weeks of August. We're hoping to camp at Lake O'Hara and we're going to start calling this Friday. If you haven't already called, you likely missed the window for the first two weeks (unless they still have group...

Looking for transportation info around Glacier/Canadian Rockies

Thanks for the info. Unfortunately, we already had tickets booked. But we'll keep Spokane in mind for any future trips. We are flying into Billings because we're first going to Cooke City for a week, then on to Glacier and further north. I did find a shuttle company and got a quote. We also...

Looking for transportation info around Glacier/Canadian Rockies

I know there are some members here familiar with Glacier and the Canadian Rockies (I know, big area, lol) and I'm looking for some recommendations/advice on transportation (although it's kind of a long shot). We had a two week vacation planned for the Beartooth Mtns and Glacier National Park...

    Non-hiking deathmarches

Well, at least you did all the easier hiking in CO first so you were in shape for the tough climb up Panorama Point. :D

    Non-hiking deathmarches

Okay, I have to ask. Why were you in western Nebraska? (I'm guessing for the high point. I grew up in that area so your post caught my eye).

Do I Look Like An Idiot?

I think people are usually well intentioned, so I just shrug it off. There are times though when they are quite insistent and I start to get annoyed (one incident I recall is all the comments we got descending the Flume trail, I was about ready to bop somebody on the head with my Nalgene)...

    Yosemite!

We did a 4 day/3 night trip out of the valley and had intended to do a 3 day/2 night from the high country (through Tuolomne Meadows), but that didn't pan out due to conditions. If you end up doing a trip from the high country, see if you can squeeze in a visit to Mono Lake. Our trip out of...

    Where do Wind Farms belong?

Grumpy, those are neat pictures (and you're right, a little eerie). I grew up in Northwest Nebraska and always thought it was a perfect place for wind farms. I think more and more are popping up around there (I think one main issue is intersecting the paths of migrating birds, not sure how...

    Online Backup Services for Photos

I just signed up for mozy. The initial backup takes a loooong time, but every backup after that is quick as it just does a backup of any new/edited files. It's $5 a month. I asked several techie friends about online backup and they both said mozy was a good choice. Carbonite was also...

    Has anybody else seen Blindsight?

We just watched it last night. It's about a group of blind kids from Tibet that attempt Lhakpa-Ri (a 23,000 foot peak opposite the North Ridge of Mt Everest) with Erik Weihenmayer (the blind mountain climber who has done the seven summits). Although the film is centered around the climb, the...

The Year 2008 in Review - Post away!

Busy bunch. :D I don't do lists and this year there weren't any major "accomplishments" like a mega hike or backpack. But I'd have to say this year was probably more rewarding because it was our first with our daughter. We were thrilled that she loved the outdoors as much as we did and she...

Your Top 8 (photos) of 2008!

Those pictures from the Lost Coast are great. I like how the seals blend in and you don't notice them right away. I would love to the High Sierra Trail. The Rae Lakes Loop was my first longer backpack and it was so much fun.

Your Top 8 (photos) of 2008!

Thanks for starting this thread. I love looking at everybody's pictures. I look forward to seeing your pictures. They are always amazing! I didn't take that many pictures this year and the ones I did take certainly have a different theme this year. :D To round out the eight I included a...

    Once in a lifetime visit

Awesome. We spent three weeks in Patagonia last year (Torres del Paine and Fitzroy) and it was our favorite vacation (more so than New Zealand, but that one was slightly tarnished due to bum weather). You'll have a fantastic time!
