LRTC offers patch for hiking in Ossipees

Thanks Carole, looks like I almost qualify, I just need the Brook trail and the Bridle path to get the patch. I'm waiting to do the Brook trail in the spring.

Why are there more bee and wasp stings this summer?

My 2-year old daughter was stung 9 times by yellowjackets a couple of weeks ago. She unfortunately stepped on a parking lot barrier made of wood where they were nesting. Fortunately she wasn't allergic but we called 9-1-1 anyway with that many stings as a precaution. I picked her up when she...

    Berries 2009

Great year for raspberries in all varieties, red, black and golden. They are in full swing right now. Blackberries are coming and it looks like another bumper crop like last year. All the cool, rainy weather I guess. Blueberries are ripe in So. NH, the other day I had a 4-berry walk! :)

Mountain Lion in Pawtuckaway - Let the debate begin

There's a nice mountain lion exhibit at the Squam Lake science center in Holderness. We were just there with my daughter. The bobcat exhibit is nearby and there is no mistaking these two cats. The lions are much bigger, longer and leaner with a very long tail. That would be an amazing...

    Child carrier security question

The weight is more on your shoulders although the hip belt does help. With Elizabeth inside, this weighs about 37lbs. Balance is very good. But you do feel it most when descending if they're squirmy. The top covering is not a roll cage, think of very thin flexible tent poles. The child is...

    Child carrier security question

The Kelty version of baby carriers have a built in pillow which they rest their heads on. I've used mine many times and Elizabeth loves sleeping in it. She had her first ride at about 7 months. The roof keeps the sun off her and we bought a fine mesh net which keeps the bugs off her. It's a...

Continuing eruption of Mount Redoubt in Alaska affecting our weather?

Thanks for the responses everyone. I submitted my question also to the Observatory and here's what Ryan Knapp came back with.

Continuing eruption of Mount Redoubt in Alaska affecting our weather?

We've had an unusually cooler June here in the Northeast. Dryer than normal so far here in southern NH but with much less available sunlight. Could the continuing eruptions of Mount Redoubt be playing havoc with our weather? Some of the erptions threw ash 50,000 and 65,000 feet into the...

Isolation bushwhack starts on the way down?

Some of the bushwhacks I've done in winter are likely to be pretty muddy in summer. When we did it in the summer a few years ago, we just stuck to the regular trails.

    Humphreys Peak, AZ

We used them, there was a very steep section below the ridge and we didn't want to go sliding into volcanic rock. But we did get off trail. Good snowshoes would've been OK too.

    Humphreys Peak, AZ

We did it in late April a few years ago and there was probably 6-10 inches of snow up there. We didn't bring snowshoes but ended up getting off trail so we used crampons to get up to the ridge. If you stay on the trail you shouldn't need them. Great hike, enjoy
