    Flags on the 48 Reminder

Owlshead for us, I doubt many will stop by but you never know. We're looking forward to flying the flag in the clear from the new summit.

    Colorado. High and Dry.

The Twin Sisters was my first introduction to high elevation as well. Lots of fond memories of that mountain. I loved the little Pikas running around with mouthfuls of grass. We had a clear day and and incredible view of Longs, might be the best place to see it. Great adventure and nice...

    Owl's Head

Great wilderness hike and even some nice views from the top. I'm headed there again on Saturday.

    Beechnuts and black bears

A commom wives tale is that more nuts and acorns in the fall means we're in for a bad winter. Seems like allot more walnuts this year, hmmmmm ;)

    Bay of Fundy sidetrip

I'm just returning from a trip to Campobello and East Quoddy Headlight, what Waumbek and Rick said is right on. We got there 1-1/2 hrs before low tide and the water looked to be over my head but within 45 minutes was knee deep and pretty easy to cross. The water is freezing cold! I didn't...

    Are the blueberries ripe?

I was in the Whites on Saturday and at elevations above 3K they were 50/50 ripe and unripe. They are plentiful this year and sweet.

Pine Marten, recent sightings in the Whites?

Thanks HighHorse, I'll check that out on Saturday. Ripple, thank you. That area is truly wilderness, I love it around there.

Pine Marten, recent sightings in the Whites?

Hi, I'm writing an article about this beautiful creature. I've only seen them once (live) at Thoreau Falls. Has anyone seen them around lately. I was on Pierce recently where they're supposed to be common and didn't have any encounters. I saw a dead one this month but he wasn't very...

    Deer flies have dissipated!

In Southern NH, they're still buzzing but not as aggressively as the past two weeks. I hate them, they're evil.

    Mink on the Zealand Tr.??

I've encountered Pine Martens twice, once at Thoreau falls in the Whites and once closer to home, a dead one. They're not very big at all, much smaller than a fisher and no way 3-ft long. They have cute rounded ears, brownish body with a creamy light tan patch under their chin. NH dept of...

    HOT,HAZY & HUMID this weekend

Dugan's a winter hiker anyway, like me. On these hot days I like to get the uphill stuff done early....I also like the hat in the stream, it works great.

Wildcat Ridge Trail tomorrow - too slick?

I thought the Polecat was an excellent way to descend, really much nicer than some of the other ski-trails. It can be a bit buggy. Avoid Cat-A-Pult which goes down from the picnic tables, that's steep and brushy. One nice thing about Polecat this time of year is on the lower stretches where...

    Timber Rattlesnakes in Maine?

Looks like a scene from an old western Kevin, nice shot. We saw plenty of those when we lived in TX. I'll keep your hiker saying in mind if I ever get out that way to hike again. I've seen snakes myself while picking berries up on the barrens in Maine. Berries like lots of open fields and...

    Timber Rattlesnakes in Maine?

According to fish and game, the area is prime for snakes, lots of open ledgy rocks and brush. Jeff did say in our conversation that this snake clearly rattled at him, no mistaking that sound. Like George, Jeff did a respectable jump backwards. The family living there was warned by the...

    Timber Rattlesnakes in Maine?

    Timber Rattlesnakes in Maine?

Has anyone ever seen a Timber Rattlesnake in Maine or NH? My brother-in law who is a professional hiker (AKA CMP meter reader) works in the Boothbay region in Lincoln County. One day recently he was reading some meters at remote cottages on the island of Southport when he saw a snake about 3...

    Alpine flower identification

Thanks Turnbill, I have something at home but it didn't have this particular one. They did seem quite common though.
