is a WMNF parking pass needed on the Kancamangus?

I should probably get one b/c my hiking season(s) are about to start. Bring on the all-natural air conditioning, say good-bye to bugs and tourists, hello knee-friendly shock-absorbing snow, peace-out to backpack-raiding rodents and bears, and yee-haw to various forms of snow-covered trail descents.

    Worst bug encounters ever

I often think of this photo when I'm trying to imagine if the bugs could possibly be worse.

Whenever I think of Baxter and the surrounding areas this time of year - all I think of are how bad the black flies can be. JFYI

Looks like a major solar upgrade and new roof at Greenleaf Hut

    - I just helped wrap up an 8.2 KW install in Lebanon, ME today and we put down the rail vertically vs horizontally across the roof for a couple of complicated reasons. For the hut, they likely decided that they could fit the largest number of panels/modules and achieve a happy balance of...

This guy goes for quite the ride and his helmet-cam captures it all: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=U3C799_ruzQ#!. More info here. "Mark Roberts, 47, was climbing with pick axes in Snowdonia [Wales] when he was hit by a chunk of ice dislodged above him by another...

    skinning up to Tumbledown

Every time I hike up the brook trail in the winter I wish I had brought my XC skis for that first mile or so you are talking about. It would be a very do-able descent for me. I often bring my sled and find that easier to maneuver on most steep hiking trails than downhill skis as I am a novice...

Best restaurant for post-hike dinner in Whites

I realize this thread is way old, but I'll contribute anyway. It's more of a pre-hike breakfast sort of place, but I just discovered the White Mountain Cafe in Gorham. Great breakfast sandwiches and burritos as well as baked goods and hot drinks.

    Rt. 16 closed?

I'm definitely not planning on taking 16, thanks - it just caught my interest as kind of a big deal if it is closed. Yeah, I work for ReVision Energy and was part of 2 projects in Randolph in the last 2 weeks. One was a Views member.

    Rt. 16 closed?

I am headed north to do a solar install in Lancaster, NH and want to avoid any road closures so I checked this website: http://www.nh.gov/dot/511/. On it I saw a notice for Rt. 16 that says This is the main route from 302 up to 2, right? Is it shut down completely or just for part of the day...
