21 out of 31 who reached the observatory over the weekend needed assistance

I've crossed the knife edge of Mt. Katahdin 4 times - twice with a Boy Scout group - and on both of those occasions I probably shouldn't have been up there. Looking at the faces of the boys in this picture at the Summit Building, I couldn't help recall those two trips across the Knife Edge...

    Oh baby! (food)

Yeah, I thought of that, but even a few of them probably weigh less than a fresh apple or orange or mango, etc... which some folks do carry.

    Oh baby! (food)

I was feeding our new baby some store-bought organic fruit and veggie purees that come in ~4 oz plastic/foil pouches (similar to those found in MRE's or Tasty Bites) and thought that they might make tasty trail food for backpacking or day trips. QR Codes on the Trail

If Joe the Hiker goes missing, would it be possible for S&R to access any sort of digital records and see if Joe checked out any signs w/his smart phone in order to help figure out where he might be?

    Moosilauke conditions

I've only hiked Moosilauke once and it was in the middle of the summer, but I remember thinking how I'd never attempt the Beaver Brook trail in the winter without bringing crampons because of the numerous steep stones (some more stair-like than others) that one has to climb so often. After...

Poll: Icy/Snowy attempts of Mt. Washington - From Rt. 302 or Rt. 16?

Yeah, this pretty much describes my approach and experience as well - especially when hiking with my wife and dog. I try not to take the dog when I think there's a better than 10% chance I'll need crampons.

Poll: Icy/Snowy attempts of Mt. Washington - From Rt. 302 or Rt. 16?

Not sure why the poll limited the number of characters in the question and cut mine off?

Poll: Icy/Snowy attempts of Mt. Washington - From Rt. 302 or Rt. 16?

This poll does not suggest that attempting to hike Mt. Washington from any trail at any time of the year is easy or should be done without careful planning and training. When planning an outing to the summit of Mt. Washington when the trail may have a considerable amount of snow or ice that...

Cannon Mountain - Environmental Damage, Hiking Prohibition, and SB217

I've found that in snowy winters, many of the shady trails and higher peaks have plenty of snow-shoeable snow through mid May.
