Sad news! I never hiked with Dennis, but I talked to him every year at Pat and Audrey's pot luck in Lexington MA. He used to make the trip down every year. Very nice guy with a HUGE knowledge of the White Mountains and more. RIP Dennis. You will be missed!

I was on Eisenhower and Monroe today and it was very Fall like with 100 mile visibility. It was very windy though which kept the bugs away 👍. No rime ice and temps in the 50's. The records on MW never surprise me. It's such a unique mountain range that fortunately is mostly right in the middle...

My wife and I nordic skied at Jackson NH ski area over the weekend and conditions kind of sucked. It had thin cover and was icy. With warmer temps this week and March around the corner, I think nordic skiing is going to be pretty much done for the season unless we get a really nice March snow...

IMO, most 22 year olds are not that experienced. My wife and I hiked Mt. Baldy in late December 2023, and we encountered zero snow or ice, even though we were prepared for it. We also went the same route as her and did not think the mountain was dangerous. I think that is part of the problem...

My wife and I will be there. It's always a fun time and the hosts are great people.

This was one fun day almost 20 years ago. IMO, hiking the VT 4K's are easier in winter (as long as the trails are broken out) than summer. Sorry for the old trip report!

I only wear a head net when I am doing trail work because I can usually out run them. The worst thing about wearing a head net is when you forget it is on and you spit... :oops:

I hiked the Pierce/Eisenhower loop on Saturday and wore microspikes the whole day except for snowshoes coming down Edmands Path. I had no problem with either of them balling up. There were some icy sections of the Crawford Path down low, so maybe she encountered ice...

Regarding water crossings in that area, I use 300 cfs of the East Branch of the Pemi as a barometer. I can rock hop across where the Thoreau bridge used to be if it is 300 cfs or less, which is harder than Lincoln Brook, but this is my personal comfort level. Others might have different comfort...

The BPBW is no longer a BW. It is a well defined herd path that is close to being a trail. I was there last month (on my yearly Owls Head hike), and every year it becomes more defined. At some point, it will likely be made into an official trail. These days, I think the BPBW is easier to follow...
