Classic Bonds Traverse for W48 Completion

Awesome job Jim! Don't stop, keep on getting out there and experiencing life (which is way too short)...

Nearly Identical Elevation, But Very Different Summits: North Twin vs. Eisenhower

I think it has more to do with "valley, valley, valley". Eisenhower is part of the exposed Presidential Range (which has a huge valley in front to give it the brunt of the winds). The Twins are more protected by having the Franconia's blocking much of the wind...

    Cold Weather Insulation Tape

You have the right idea with "foam tape" I like to use closed cell foam (like from an old sleeping pad) along with duct tape. Duct tape it's self is not much of an insulator, but closed cell foam is about as good as it gets...

    Climber dies on Mount Hood

Dr. D., like our last April trip when we had to dodge refrigerator sized chunks of tumbing ice travelling at 40 mph coming from Yale Gulley? It's a sad story, but we all "choose" to play in the mountains which are especially dangerous in winter... Hobbes, The "Hogsback" is the standard...

    the captain

I've gone that way, but never in winter. Hamtero has it right, after the open area filters out, head slightly to the left and follow the brook going up the left side of the Captain. It's still going to get thick near the top but that is the best approach in winter. If you would rather go to the...

    Fuel Consumption

As a rule of thumb, I plan on using 8oz of white gas per day/per person for winter backpacking (no scientific data, just based on experience. Doug Paul??:)). I also always bring extra just in case. Since stoves are our lifelines when winter camping, carrying a little extra fuel is well worth...

Where the Hale were you guys?

First of all, nice trip report and pictures. Secondly, if I am lucky enough to live to be 70 and am doing the things you do, I will be one happy guy! Your one of those people who "lives" and doesn't just exist in life, which is the minority these days... Just keep on doing what your doing. Your...

Mt Madison & Madison Gulf Trail 1/10/09

Funny how you mention skiing, because Nif and I were talking about that as we were breaking trail down thru all of that powder. She is 10x the skier that I will ever be, and she thought it would be pretty tough. If I tried to ski the Madison Gulf, I would likely end up like Sonny Bono :eek...

Madison via GG/Osgood/Madison Gulf Trails 10JAN09

Trail Conditions: Great Gulf Trail was packed out to the Osgood Trail. Osgood had 4-6” of powder over a packed base. Above treeline had about 1/3rd ice, 1/3rd snow, 1/3rd rock (typical Winter Presidential conditions). Madison Gulf Trail had lots of deep powder with some icy sections (especially...

    Stove lighting problems.

I think that all you need is just a new bic lighter (they work well for me for white gas stoves). Waterproof matches also work well.

    S. Horn (Bigelow) via AT/Horns Pond/Firewarden’s Trails 29Dec08

Trail Conditions: Stratton Pond Rd is plowed for the first quarter mile with parking spots for about 4 vehicles (I’d plan on shoveling if you have more). The AT was broken out all the way to the Horns Pond Shelter Outhouses (as MEB stated, someone must have really had to go poop!) :D. We broke...

    Crockers via CVR/AT 27Dec08

Trail Conditions: CVR was plowed out at the entrance for about 8 vehicles. The rest of it was well broken out by snowmobiles. At the AT crossing, neither direction was broken out (up Sugarloaf or the Crockers). The snowpack was deep and heavy, so it took 9 of us a LONG time to break out the...

    Elephant Mountain 26Dec08

Trail Conditions: It was plowed out on S. Arm Rd/Elephant Mtn Rd intersection for about 6 vehicles. We followed the road for about .5 miles (which had been heavily snowmobiled), then where it turns left we decided to go straight and follow the narrower trail along Clearwater Brook (could go...

Tim Pond Road - Cupsuptic Snow

The Morton Cut Off is plowed past the Lincoln Pond/Tim Pond intersection towards Burnt Mt, but Skimom and I didn't drive up it on Burnt Mt Rd. We did meet a sled dog guy who said we couldn't get very far up the road so we didn't even try. Regardless, even though some of these logging roads are...

    Ice Storm Trail Clean Up

Since this was a Northern Mass/Southern NH storm, the White Mountains were spared (this time). I still remember practically bushwhacking the Hancocks back in April 98 due to the devistation. Lots of people down here in Mass are still without power, and the trails in the Monadnock region (as...

    Self Arrest theory ve practice

Personally, when climbing steep slopes with a mountaineering axe, I always keep the adze under my thumb for a FAST arrest. Like mentioned, the quicker this is done (regardless of style) the better chance of success. As far as practicing with crampons on or off. Definitely practice with them...

    Books for the holidays

I second "Our Mountain Trips" both one and two. AMAZING stories, especially if your familiar with the White Mountains... Nothing like the days when you rode a horse and buggy from Boston to the Whites for four days to just to hike Chocorua...

    More about pulks

6 years ago I did a Hale/Zealand/Bonds traverse with a 40 lb sled, and it was one of the hardest things I have ever done (I swore I would never do it again). Last winter I pulled another 40 lb sled up and over Mt. Abraham in Maine on a traverse from Barjum to Kingfield and I had forgotten...
