    Pulks comparison

Personally, I think that the rigging/harness system is more important than the sled it'self. Weight and friction properties are negligable when you load a sled. The shape is more important. Long narrow sleds are the way to go, along with a rigid harness system to keep the sled from flipping...

Lafayette and Lincoln via Skookumchuck/Franconia Ridge/Falling Waters Trails

Date of Hike: 11-2-08 Trail Conditions: The Skoocumchuck Trail (which is Abenaki for Skookumchuck), was in fantastic shape! A little snow above 3500', but no ice. The ridge was sweet with little snow or ice. Heading down Falling Waters had a good mile of icy stuff, but after that it was fine...

    Katahdin 2009

I have done the Knife Edge over a dozen times, and it is much harder descending The Chimney (going counter clockwise) than descending Pamola (going clockwise) when doing it... Definitely don't need a rope for either in July (unless you are an Oompa Loompa) :D

    Katahdin 2009

I don't have much to contribute, but all I have to say is try and get reservations for Chimney Pond. From there you can do the loop (up Cathederal, across the Knife Edge, and down Dudley, or even include Hamlin Ridge...:) The true experience is to include the Knife Edge... Bottom line...

Definitely, long live the Irish! My Grandmother was from Co. Mayo. And if it wasn't for God creating whisky, (or everything else that has alcohol in it), the Irish would rule the world!!!!!!

    vose spur

I have done Vose 4 times (only once without snow), and if you are looking to do them both on the same hike, then I recommend heading up to Carrigain and whacking down to Vose along the ridge. It is not as bad as people say... If the weather is good it is fairly easy to navigate, but if the...

    Insulated Mitts

The Alti's are awesome gloves for high altitude stuff, but they are a pain in the a$$ to use with rope work. I lost one as we were heading down Denali Pass as we were clipping into one of the many pickets. I also made a bad oxygen strived decision by lunging for it and had a close one...

Little Bear's New England 100th on Baldpate 10/4

Well done! You have come a long way since that winter Tripyramids hike about 8 years ago (remember that one? hehehe) , and I have been very fortunate to have known you as a friend and to have been along on many other adventures over the years (winter to BSP, several of the Flags on the...

    Camping in Maine

I'd say go for it! The worst thing that can happen is someone asking you to leave, which is a pretty slim chance. I have slept in my vehicle at both the CVR at the AT crossing, and the Fire Warden's Trail up the Bigelows (never at the Fire Warden's Trail for Abraham, but I wouldn't hesitate...

What is the equivalent of climbing Everest 16 times?

Awesome job! You 2 realized long ago that anything is possible in life as long as you work hard for it. Well done!!!!!!!! (spraying cyber champagne on you both). Welcome back to reality and see you soon!

    Any Hike Suggestions?

If I were in your shoes, I would go for either an Eisenhower/Monroe Loop (some road walking involved) or a little harder Monroe/Washington Loop, or an even harder Monroe/Washington/Jefferson Loop (some road walking). All are doable under 9 hours this time of year (for most people) and all are...

Madison via Airline w/kids for FOT48

Awesome day, and the weather turned out better than expected. :) Emily and Sean did fantastic! That is a tough mountain for kids, but they did very well. It's awesome that you are giving them these experiences that will last a lifetime. That is what life is all about, experiences.... Thanks...

Volcanic sunset, Hancock Notch, freindly fox, Captain sighting?

Nah... What Forestgnome does to get those beautiful shots is what most hikers don't do. He finds a nice location and sits & waits... Same as hunting, but with a camera instead of a rifle. Patience can be quite rewarding... :)

    "unmaintained" trails vs "maintained" trails

Recently I was hiking again in the Adk's (which I don't get to do as often as I would like), and I ended up doing 2 of the trail-less peaks (which are obviously not trail-less) :) . Anyway, my question lies, what defines a trail-less peak? The 2 I did (Gray, and Cliff) had maintained herd paths...

    Cliff, excellent conditions

Nice job Guiness! I missed you by 2 days :D. I saw your name in the register and figured I might run into you, but noticed that you cut your 3 day trip a little short (now I know why). I hope your blisters are getting better... I ended up doing Gray, Skylight, and Cliff as a dayhike yesterday...
