    Have you ever been attacked?

Attacked by hawk on AT in Maine On 7/30/1999 while hiking from Falls Dam Road to the Kennebec River on the AT in Maine I was attacked by a hawk that had built its nest right on the trail before the hikers started arriving. It flew right at me and I used my poles over my head to keep it at bay...

    Protecting an expensive camera!

Tamrac 515 Just found a "barely used" Tamrac 515 on E-bay for $18.30 with shipping. My camera /lens will fit perfectly in it! I'll check out the sundog harness - it looks great. Cost $18 though. Thanks for all the help and advice. Gordon

    Protecting an expensive camera!

Halite; Did you make your harness or buy it? If you bought it, who made it and where can I get one. I like the word "Mesh" you used to describe the harness as that implies light weight!!! Viva La "Light weight!"!!! Thanks. Gordon

    Protecting an expensive camera!

Is it attached to your waist belt? I can't quite tell from the picture (love the picture by the way) but is the pouch attached to the web belt of your back pack to prevent it from swinging away from your body while hiking? The harness you indicated in your first post would certainly prevent...

    Protecting an expensive camera!

Found one that might work well!! I got onto B&H and found a top loader WITH HARNESS for $49.95 that weighs 1.1# It might replace my wet rib as it is almost 12 inches deep and I only need 7" deep so could put my other stuff underneath the camera!! This might work out ok. The URL for this is...

    Protecting an expensive camera!

I Appreciate the responses I like the padded holster bag idea along with a harness. How did you attach the bag to the harness? Who makes the bag you use in your picture? My camera measures 7"W x 7"D(the lens) by 4 1/2" high. I'll check out the suggestions. Thanks. Gordon

    Protecting an expensive camera!

I am doing a 130mile hike on the AT down in TN & VA this april. I want to take my Nikon D200 plus a 18-200mm lens but need some ideas on how best to protect it. In the past I took a Nikon Coolpix and it was small enough to fit into the Dana Design "Wet Rib" that I have attached to my Gregory...

    Mt Cardigan??

Hi-Cabin over night? I've been looking for a place to do a nice hike with an over night. I saw that H-Cabin is open this coming week and thought it would be nice to stay there ($40 for the cabin and it sleeps 12). I've never climbed Cardigan so do not know any of the trails. If anyone has...

    Hiking with Tripods

Not anymore... I am a retired semi-professional photographer who hikes about 600 miles a year. I took my camera last year when I did part of the AT in Georgia along with a panoramic Hasselblad XPAN camera. My idea was to get the mountains at sunset. It became clear to me about 3 days into...

    # of burns on propane tank?

Some research done Thanks for your comments. I did do some research on the alcohol stoves and found that the weight comparison is very close. The alcohol stove can be tricky and while on the AT in Virginia last spring a hiker had his blow up causing 3rd degree burns. In all fairness I have to...

Recommend me a good Gore-Tex lined midweight boot

A lot of factors! Hello hiker fans: I sell boots (and other gear) at EMS in Peterboro, NH and can tell you that everyones feet are different in many ways. What works well for one person is likely not to work for another. We have training on foot shapes and feet vary a lot. Also, we have a...

    # of burns on propane tank?

Thanks... I appreciate your reply. I just read a book on meal preparation for AT thru hikers. They used a GAZ cannister (didn't say which size) and stated that they got 8 meals from each canister. I reallize that they are cooking pot meals as opposed to boiling water but that sounded quite...

    # of burns on propane tank?

A year or two ago I asked if anyone had measured the number of times one could fire up a propane/butane canister for cooking. I got a great answer that was "30 times heating two cups of water from a cold start". However, the message doesn't seem to be in here anymore and I can't recall if the...
