Free Antisnow plates for Petzl crampons

Fish, I did try them on. They are not the easiest I've installed, and I believe they would stay on without using the wires. A field test will tell all. Not having used the crampons yet, I'll probably go without any if it's 28 or below, & experiment with the original & these new ones in warmer...

My Suunto Vector read -24,000 ft

Doug, Yup! I now take my little Garmin Geko as well to back up the main built-in unit. I'm glad I learned my lesson in calmer conditions & hope not to fall back into the lala land of complacency. But like you said, all can fail. Lots of fun!

Free Antisnow plates for Petzl crampons

Not sure if this has been posted already and it's a little early to be thinking about winter gear, but........... Due to the recall of Montrail's Ice Nine & Khumbu crampons I had to replace them. I chose Petzl Vasak to replace the khumbu. Shortly after that, I read an ad in this July Climbing...

My Suunto Vector read -24,000 ft

I don't suppose you guys bicycle to work? After all, you could run out of gas! Just kidding. Appreciate all comments & imput. That's what forums are for. I do recommend a compass & more important, a MAP! Which I continue to see hikers without. I like the altimeter for placing myself on...

My Suunto Vector read -24,000 ft

John, I'd put my diplomatic shoes on, If you will, and make a good case to them for another watch at n/c. Unless you're very careless, which I'll assume otherwise, your not getting a fair shake. One other option, if you still have proof of purchase, is to take it back to the original dealer &...

My Suunto Vector read -24,000 ft

John Iv'e had mine on a flight before and never had a problem. Just for kicks, what does the barometric pressure read? That's where the info for elevation comes from. (the pressure in relation to sea level) Which is why you need to adjust at known elevations due to changes in the weather...

What 4,000 footer to finish on?

I'll cast a vote for Adams as well. Washington was my first and Adams was my last. Not that I planned it that way, but it was a nice finish!

    North Brother/Fort & Baxter 6/10 & 11

I can't remember being so glad to walk in my house and see the AC on. :) Usually I hate it. But after this trip, I treasured it beyond description. Same thoughts as we got into the truck after hiking each day. I don't think I ever hiked in conditions like that before. I've been on very warm...

Saddlebacks, Abe, Spaulding & Sugarloaf May 28-30

Yes it was. It kicked my butt, coming up it with a full pack. Between that, postholing on the North side of Spaulding, and everything else, made for one of the toughest days ever for me. If you liked the moose piles, check out the mine fields at Crocker Camp when your passing by. It's a good...

Hey Poison Ivy, MEB, Michael J, & Rachael, Nice to run into you guys Sunday night. Glad you made it out ok. Sounds like the river dropped a little since Sun. AM. :) Nice. We will dry out! ;) I think. Never Postholed so much. Ever! The Caribou Valley Rd. is not too far past Sugarloaf Ski...

    Ankle Brace??

Hey MEB, It sound like you've gotten a lot of good advice. If none of the braces etc. work, try the Heat Moldable Footbeds by SOLE. (got mine at EMS) My right foot was rolling in (pronating) and I found myself limping a little towards the end of the day. I was skeptical at first, and they...

    Help with GPS

Neil, I wouldn't say there is a performance difference, but some of the eTrex units have mapping and some other capabilities. Also has a slightly larger screen. If your looking for mapping features, I would bypass the eTrex series & head straight for the 60CS. It's a better unit. It has a...

    Help with GPS

Gps If your looking for a nice unit for Bushwhacking, I can strongly advise the Garmin Geko 301. Garmin, because they are very user friendly. I've been using them for boating since 1994 and I've had great success with them. Geko, because they are light, small, so you can rig them to sit on top...

    the best bug spray ?

You've got to go with what works on you. Personally, I hate to put chems. on, period. Especially if I can't wash it off soon. But when the conditions are real bad, nothing else but Deet products work on me. The lower the amount of Deet (7% - 15%) the more often it has to be applied. Good...

    Presi Traverse

Hey Mike, Sounds like a great trip. I've always gone after the summits, but I can understand your intentions. One thought on the direction to travel, N to S or S to N. WIND! Maybe look at forecasts ahead of time and check the direction & speed. That could make a big difference on everything...
