Thanks SherpaKroto for the advice. That sounds like a good plan of attack. Right now they are calling for a mostly sunny day. :) MEB, I hear you on the snowshoes. For me it's the crampons. It sounds like it's all coming with me. Just didn't want to haul it up there for fun. But we all...

    recommended head lamp?

I'll cast one vote for the Princeton Tec Aurora. ($30 or less) Also get the Princeton Tec Blast flashlight, ($10 or less) to locate trails at a distance like a river crossing. The Aurora just doesn't reach far enough for that. Both run on AAA batteries, (now available in Lithium), and weight...

    Isolation Bushwhack on 3/12 Ms. Brown's #48

Doug, Spider & anyone interested, I have the actual path that we took overlayed onto a Nat. Geo. Map. (The trails have changed a little over the years) From there you can probably figure out were you may have ventured. We were on Davis Path for a short time but never really saw the Isolation...

    Isolation Bushwhack on 3/12 Ms. Brown's #48

Kevin, That is the game plan. Same as it was last Sat. To Bushwhack from the height of land on RB trail over to 3100'-3200' on the Isol. trail. At that point last week we would have stayed on Isol. trail all the way due to the rough going we encountered on the 1st Bushwhack. It sounds like...

    Isolation Bushwhack on 3/12 Ms. Brown's #48

Clark & Rox, Hope to see you out there. There's a couple of groups going for it that were denied at least once this year. I think all are hopeful this time. Been talking to SpiderSolo. I believe he was trying again today. Hopefully he made it & is ok. Lots of spruce traps waiting for yah...

    Isolation Bushwhack on 3/12 Ms. Brown's #48

Spider, I'll send you a map via email with the bushwhack route on it. Let me know where you varied from that. With the snow this deep, I'm starting to think it may make more sense to stay on the trail after the first bushwhack area.

To SkiMom, ARM & the entire Carrigain Crew, I'm sooooo happy for all of you! :) :) :) It was a tough day out there & took a lot of everything you had to complete the trip. I wish we could have celebrated together, but it would have been a breakfast (Sun.) celebration if we continued the...

    Isolation Bushwhack on 3/12 Ms. Brown's #48

Just to let all know, we are heading up tonight to beat the snow. Some are still going up tomorrow. Try to be at the Trailhead at 8:15 for an 8:30 start as mentioned. Take an extra pr. of gloves/mitts to account for the snowfall most of the day. We will turn back if conditions call for it...

    Isolation Bushwhack on 3/12 Ms. Brown's #48

Sat. LittleBear, I think it's safe to say, we are all watching the weather at this point. I agree, the trail is not the problem. It's almost 3-1/2 hrs. from Westford, MA (w/ pit stops :) ) to that Trailhead, but it's the safety of all I'm more concerned about. I think most of the snow will...

3D viewing GPS coordinates of hike overlaid onto of USGS maps?

Hikingfish, A very basic mapping program would be National Geographic's TOPO 4.0 Northeastern USA. ($100.00) Along with TOPO Streets & 3D Views Expansion Pack. ($20.00) You can build a route & do a fly over in 3D. It is basic & not going to be as good as other programs mentioned above, but...

3D viewing GPS coordinates of hike overlaid onto of USGS maps?

You got it! I waited til they (Energizer) came out with Lithium AAA's. (Just within the past year). Then I went out & bought a new headlamp, flashlight & GPS that all run on AAA batts.. Before that I used 123 Lithium cells. And what didn't run on them, I rigged them to.
