    Spring comes to NH?

On Sunday Mary and I hiked up Mount Major and back down along Straight Back Ridge. The Mount Major trails were easy to find because they are all ribbons of ice. Straight Back was mostly clear but in places there were sections of snow. There were fresh bear tracks in a few places. It must be Spring.

    Tracks in the snow

Mary and I went for a short wander in the Mink Hills in Henniker NH on Sunday. It was a very nice day and we came upon a bunch of foot prints that we couldn't identify using our fogged memories. These prints were different from any of the other winter critters we were familiar with but when we...

Cannon Mountain - Environmental Damage, Hiking Prohibition, and SB217

This may not be exactly what is being debated here but I would like to report what has happened in another State Park with a ski area here in NH. Years ago, Mt. Sunapee ski area was part of Mt. Sunapee State Park and was operated by the State of NH. I used to enjoy hiking up the hill and sliding...

    GPS, Maps, and cameras ILLEGAL

What if the "private property" has an easement, paid for with tax payer money, that guarantees public, pedestrian access?

    GPS, Maps, and cameras ILLEGAL

The bill does not seem all that bad a deal on the surface. If you look a little closer it becomes apparent that this is a law that is being passed to protect big corporate landowners that don't want anyone to know what is being done "out there". They have the funds, connections, and the lawyers...

    The" Dirty Dozen"

this bill is pretty specific about not granting access rights that were not already in place. If it is posted, you are still not welcome. The curious bit I see is that it makes all data collected in the past illegal to share print or anything else unless you have written permission in hand...

    GPS, Maps, and cameras ILLEGAL

In case you have missed the latest work by your Representatives in Concord, HB 514 passed without as much as a squeak from the hikers of this state. Note: I would have more than squeaked if I had heard about this. If you read this bill you will note that it will be illegal to take photos on...

    bears???

I hiked the PCT from Whitney to Lake Taho some years ago and the only place I had bear visits was coming down into Tuolumne Meadows. There are a LOT of bears there. I brought a 50 foot length of 1/8 inch steel cable with a loop swaged on both ends. Using a cord with a rock I was able to haul the...

property owner sued for faulty tree stand

If he didn't pay the land owner to hunt there, the laws are fairly clear, drunk or not. See: http://www.gencourt.state.nh.us/rsa/html/XVIII/212/212-34.htm

    Map Questions

If you have a bunch of maps that you can join together to make the image you want for your wall, you can scan them at high resolution, piece them together in PhotoShop into a single image, and get one printed at someplace like Staples. They have printers that can make really big prints and they...

    1938 Hurricane Pictures

OK, this isn't hiking related but here are two photos of the old stone bridge in Henniker, NH taken before and after the hurricane of 1938.

Elementary Dr. Watson, Thank you very much for pointing out what should have been obvious to me. I will write it off to old age.

The threaded part seems to be the fine adjustment. The threaded part sticks into holes in the plastic base and it appears that you would have to move the metal part to a different hole to do the coarse adjustment. I can't figure out how to get the metal piece out of the plastic.

Looking for inexpensive plastic double boots?

If any of you run across a source for replacements for my failing Koflachs size 12.5 or 13, please post it here. It is snowing hard and I am sure summer is over.

Once again kids, I would like help here. I am a really poor skier but I am willing to learn. How do I adjust these bindings? Since the source has dried up, I don't want to break them.

New Favorite Toy in My Toybox: Karhu Army Skis + Fritschi AT Bindings = Permagrin

Ok, I ordered a set of the skies, bindings, skins and poles from Sportsman's Guide. They sent them UPS 2 day at no extra cost even though I didn't request it. The skis, etc appear to be almost brand new. No scratches in the bottoms or anything. The skins seem to have never been used at all. I...

You can still get good new bindings to fit your "normal" winter boots. I know the ones from Ebay, etc are super cheap but they may be hard to come by. Mine are made by Silvretta (spelling) and are maybe 25 years old, but the company still makes them. If you can't ascend the mountain with your...

GPS magnetic compasses in the cold

I realize this is a bit off topic, but a really cheap "magnetic" compas does not need to be recalibrated, updated, or need new batteries and it will continue to work at temperatures outside the range of the average hiker. Sorry, but ti is a thought.
