    Tips for bear confrontations

It's also comforting to know that a mouse, squirrel, raccoon, or other industrious little creature hasn't gotten into the food. ;)

    So, Is "the Split" Working?

I like it ......... a lot .......... for many reasons. But the best thing I like about it is the return of many posters who were more active in the late 90's and pre-crash (2003). Remember Lexicomm days?

    What in Blazes?

That's actually a good point. I recall a situation in the ADKs where a well-meaning individual had posted that he dutifully removed most of the unsightly survey tape during his hike. As it turned out, a trail crew had recently used survey tape to mark a partial reroute of that trail. D'oh...

5th Annual Adirondack BBQ and Hiker Gathering

Maybe you need some help? :D (just kidding ...) Pete, .... yes, are you referring to the guy who passed on Saddleback? If I remember correctly, I think he had a heart attack. But I thought he was on his way up, and then the rescue team took his body a short distance to the summit...

    New Hampshire Break-Ins

Or maybe the thieves just took the day off. Unfortunately you'll never know. Seeing a sign may cause a would-be thief to break-in anyway, thinking you really must be hiding something ....

Doug Paul injured in a back-country ski accident

That's good to hear, Doug. You're getting there! Your recovery seems to be progressing well, ...... best of luck, and I hope that the rest of your healing is a "walk in the woods" ........ and may the endorphins flow freely. :D Rob

    New Santanoni trail?

Alan, Tim, Thanks guys! Great job. Rob PS - You probably already know this, but this deal may be just the tip of the iceberg, with many more land acquisitions over the next decade. A friend that I work with (he is a state assemblyman, not in NY ...... but I guess he has connections .......)...

    New Hampshire Break-Ins

Well stated, I agree 100% Agreed. In the situation you describe, you have no choice but to leave valuables in the car, regardless of whether they are carefully hidden or not. But I don't think that your scenario is a common attribute among the reported break-ins, .... maybe I'm wrong. Good...

The bears are out and about

Had a momma and 3 cubs in the front yard last week. And just last night, as I was watering tomato plants in the backyard, a huge bear (male I think, and no cubs), came around from the front yard and we were just about 20 feet apart. Startled me big-time, but I just stood still, and he stopped...

    Lafayette break-ins

A couple of years ago, Dr Wu posted a hilarious description of his car and why no one has ever touched it in a parking lot. He described leaving his car filthy with lots of garbage in plain sight. I won't go into too much detail about the dog vomit or "gatorade" bottle ....... :D...

    Lafayette break-ins

Not trying to dissuade you from doing this, ..... but just please be careful. A trapped animal is a dangerous animal, and I'd hate to see any of you getting hurt. Approaching or confronting a thief can be extremely dangerous because you don't know this person's history. The thief might just...

    Conway, NH accomodations??

jjo, I've stayed at the Golden Gables Inn, North Conway, and really liked it. Medium priced, very clean, pool, and great service. However, if you don't mind staying in Lincoln, a friend of mine owns a condo (Rivergreen) that he rents out. I can get you a special discounted rate. Send me a...

    Scenic Drives in the Whites

Aahhh, yes ..... Route 118 ........ your post reminded me of another nice drive ....... several actually ...... in that area. I think it was also Route 117 and or 116. It's been a few years ...... and I don't have my maps handy, but we were driving around (north of Woodstock, and west of...

    Scenic Drives in the Whites

How about the Kanc and Bear Notch Road? Lots of touristy traffic on a nice day, .... but it's awesome right after the sun rises ...... alpen-glow splashed across the Presis ........ gorgeous.

    1st NY 4K - Slide, Cornell, & Wittenberg on 5/26/07

Slide by itself from Slide Mountain Rd is definitely an easy hike. A loop or end-to-end of Wittenburg, Cornell, and Slide however is no easy walk in the park. It's one of my favorite hikes anywhere because of the scrambling and the magnificent views. Some Pics Here. It was fairly hazy that...

    another black fly question

Yup, similar experience here. Many years of staying in the High Peaks region during Memorial Day weekend and have never had a problem with black flies. I've gotten bit from late June to late July tho.
