NH Hikesafe Card in NH House study committee

The AAC benefit looks interesting, but it's hard to imagine how the "Global Rescue" half would come into play in the NH situations we're discussing. It appears to only pay for rescue (NOT search), and it only kicks in after a phone call to the provider. The "Domestic Trailhead" part looks most...

    Mittersill Trail, Mittersill Peak 10/26/2013

Trail Conditions: Trail clear and dry at lower elevations, minor snow higher up. One easily avoided blowdown just above the top of the old lift. Since I got a late start, I decided turn around at Mittersill rather than proceed to Cannon. Special Equipment: none needed. Comments: Trail is not...

Six iPhones tested, and they can't agree on magnetic north

"GPS" is way different than "compass". Most of these phone gizmos seem to be moderately reasonable about telling you where you are, but unless you are moving fairly rapidly, I doubt a GPS-based device has much of a chance of pointing you in any particular direction. I have that "show me hills"...

NH Hikesafe Card in NH House study committee

Yep. Too bad you had a cell phone. I still feel safer hiking with you than many of the yo-yos I see on the trail.

NH Hikesafe Card in NH House study committee

Yeah, it's basically that last point that made the last version of this proposal DOA with the hiking community. Why should hikers be subject to a different standard of care than all the other constituencies? (fishermen, hunters, snowmobilers, ...)

Save the date: Pat and Audrey's potluck November 2

Well, despite my best efforts to avoid a schedule conflict, my Scout Troop will be backpacking in the Whites that weekend. This is, unfortunately, the only valid reason for missing this event. Mebe next year. Have fun everyone.

Simple Parking Pass Question - No debate please...

I dearly wish the usfs would put dates on web pages labelled "proposal". Many of the locations proposed for removal haven't had fees in several (many?) years. Cherry mtn rd, haystack rd camping, gale river rd camping, but the increases don't seem to have taken effect. So I doubt this list has...

    Personal Locator Beacons

I've also found that leaving the InReach on top of the car while I drive off to head home is less than effective :-) But amazingly, it seems to work after bouncing across the parking lot (twice). For the keep-the-spouse-happy function, the long time lag from activation to reception isn't a huge...

Simple Parking Pass Question - No debate please...

I've done several Feb/March hikes starting at the Crawford Connector lot, and I don't recall the toilets being locked in winter. Vaults work at any temperature.... Of course, we know my brain is a terrible place to store facts. My only problem at that lot was the one time I showed up too early...

    Personal Locator Beacons

Completely agree. The main purpose behind the WifeProtectionBeacon is to communicate with her often enough (I usually hit it 3 or 4 times during a hike) so that she *doesn't* call out the cavalry. I got real tired of the "what time will you be back? So I call NHF&G 5 minutes later, right?"...

    Personal Locator Beacons

Most PLBs are strictly emergency-only. For the purpose of keeping the wife happy, I use a device that can send "I'm ok" messages in addition to the "help me please". The DeLorme InReach can send and receive (via satellite) SMS text messages in addition to the SOS function. For the pedants...

When does a memorial become trash in a backcountry setting?

Well, as usual, I'm a giant a-hole. Thanks for coming and sharing. Sorry if my rantings were yelling. The Boston Globe sets me off all the time, I gotta learn to stop reading that. Please be sure that none us are opposed to you trying to help other people, and we are sympathetic to what you...

When does a memorial become trash in a backcountry setting?

I thought that there might be some hope of convincing her that illegally leaving trash in the backcountry is just not an acceptable solution to her issues, no matter how noble the intent. I even appealed to a buddy of mine who was also a Marathon first responder to see if he could talk sense...

    Government shutdown...

Pardon my ignorance, but what's a "Designated RUA"? And how would I find out if one exists? I had a long chat with the folks at the White Mountain Visitor Center (NOT the WMNF), and they think the interpretation is that sites (shelters/tentsites) that charged fees are closed (primarily the ones...

    Government shutdown...

Just checked the GIS database, and there is a strip of land from Marshfield Station to the summit that is NOT owned by the USFS. Similarly for the Auto Road. Base Station Rd from 302 to Mt Clinton Rd is shown as USFS, but from there to the station is not. But still: by "Backcounty tentsites"...

    Government shutdown...

They closed the campgrounds (operated by private concessionaire), why not the huts? Neither involved USFS personnel, and both are located on USFS land. But really, what does it mean for "backcountry tentsites" to be closed? Which ones? What is "backcountry" in bureaucrateeze? I can think of...

    Government shutdown...

Yes, but that's not a complete list of backcountry tentsites in the WMNF, that's a list of ones with AMC caretakers. And bizarrely the AMC huts are still open?

    Government shutdown...

Ok, can someone tell me what "Other backcountry shelters and tentsites" means? http://news.outdoors.org/2013/10/update-mohican-wmnf-backcountry.html You know, a *list* would be really useful.

Restrictions on primitive camping in the WMNF?

I can say that I was somewhat disappointed that when I camped on Stairs Mtn back in August, the first use my trowel got was burying somebody else's "unoptimized dirt". Kind of detracted from the Wilderness Experience.

    Roadside camping near Conway?

Pro-Sports, Inc. (http://icampnh.com/) says they have to close everything down on the 10th unless the shutdown ends.
