Going on a Mission to Cherry Mountain (02-Mar-2010)

P.S. In the "for what it's worth" department, below are the only semi-worthwhile photos that I got on this particular trip. I'd say it's worth quite a bit. Those are two excellent photos. I always enjoy your reports and pictures.

Long and Ell Ponds - Hopkinton RI - 11-29-09

Nice report Mark. Although I haven't hiked it in several years, that is one of my favorite RI hikes. I'll have to get back there soon, thanks for sharing.

    Chocorua, Bluejeans, and sneakers

We hiked Chocorua on Thursday 10/8 and only saw 3 or 4 small groups of hikers the entire day. I've also been there in large crowds on weekends. It's a great little hike either way, but it's all about the timing.

Best restaurant for post-hike dinner in Whites

The Lucky Dog in Plymouth has been decent the few times I've been there. Gypsy Cafe in Lincoln is very good but a bit pricey. Nice Thai food at Krayatip, sort of behind the Tilton Diner, next to Dunkin Donuts. I'll second the Mad River Tavern and the Corner House Inn in Sandwich, both very good.

    Bear Alert Near Autoroad...

I remember reading a news account similar to this a few years ago. I think it was in the Smokies, TN or NC or thereabouts. A mother put honey on her young child's hand to entice a black bear cub, and mama bear got involved. IIRC, the child lost a hand, the mother lost her life. I thought I...

What's your opinion of "Hiker Dies/Gets Lost" threads ?

I also always read them. Not to judge, more to empathize and hope for a happy outcome. It's especially intriguing when I've hiked in the area in question.

    Mt.Eisenhower area, June 6th

Hey !! How come my pictures of Big Daddy don't look like your pictures ? It was nice to meet you. Saturday could not have been a finer day in the mountains, as your photos attest. There wasn't much blooming on the Alpine Garden trail, other than the Rosebay, but the views into the ravines...

    West Face of Cadillac Mountain

    tv show on bears.

It was a 4 or 5 part series on Animal Planet. I think it was called "A Stranger Among Bears". Very interesting with some amazing close-up video of black and grizzly bears. The guy interacted with the bears using only a stick. He'd smack them with it if they got too aggressive with him...

Snow Free Trails - New Hampshire - Spring 2009 Edition

Welch-Dickey was 99% clear on 04/25. There was an insignificant amount of snow in the trees just north of the Dickey summit. The rest of the loop was clear and mostly dry.

    Goat Packing

I was staying at Jim Liberty cabin on Chocoura many years ago when a 4H club showed up with a llama packing some of their supplies. They joined us in the cabin for the night (the club members, not the llama).

    Cascade Trail (Squam Range)

I have a USGS map of the area which shows a hiking trail from Perch Pond up to the ridge. I went poking around once while exploring around Perch Pond but couldn't locate the trail (although we didn't try too hard). I'd be interested to know if you learn anything more about it.

    Odd pets on trails

That's one of the funniest hiking stories I've ever heard. One memorable day on Chocoura I met a 4-H club group with a llama carrying most of their gear for an overnight stay at Liberty cabin. Later the same day, a couple showed up with a rottweiller (sp?). The dog had a sort of a saddlebag...

    Carrigan Via Signal Ridge Overnight

I've camped off trail a bit below the summit. As you're heading up, there's a flat area right before a final set of stone steps leading to the top. Off to the left of the trail there's a faint path leading to an area with room for a few tents. No water, though, and I wouldn't drink from the...
