    Winter nh 48 canine finishers

Good thing that Dusty started when he was 15 pounds! Don't need to give Geri any ideas on putting him on a diet  FYI - Toby who hikes with Larissa (Lriz) finished his Winter 48 last Sunday!

Preparation for a Winter Trip in Baxter

You no longer have to spend the first night at Roaring Brook - you can go all the way to Chimney Pond if you so desire, but keep in mind that since you have to make reservations well in advance you may be hiking in crappy weather - that last 3 miles has the most elevation gain and if it's been...

Using Snowmobiles to reach a trailhead

http://www.amc4000footer.org/faq.htm#info2 In winter we have absolutely forbidden the use of snowmobiles, even when a road is passable to ordinary cars in summer.

    NH 48 speed record

If he programmed a message - he could send an update to FB or to an email address every time he pushed one of the buttons - would have to be the same message all the time - he could have one button say "I am on another summit" and another say "I am at a trailhead" - it would also send the gps...

    Wildcat pass required for hikers?

Perhaps they always could charge but didn't. The response we received from the Forest Service pointed out that one could buy a pass in order to hike the mountain uphill, so they apparantly do approve that Wildcat can do so if it choices. They also agree that Wildcat can restrict access to trails...

    Wildcat pass required for hikers?

Why punish all hikers with dogs - simply post a rule that dogs myst be on a short leash?

    Wildcat pass required for hikers?

Poor Dusty was told last week he wasn't welcome in Lonesome Lake hut and now he is told that his 17 lbs of muscle is too much for the fragile ski trails - he is in the bedroom sulking!

    Wildcat pass required for hikers?

Tim It was Susan that gave me the responses from the FS. Her answers were in agreement with what Wildcat stated and it was she who provide the answers on dogs, snowshoes, sledding etc.. Of course any corporation can set policy that is not enforced by folks way down the ladder. So while one...

    Wildcat pass required for hikers?

Not sure it's new info, maybe some is but it has been floating around for a while, but this is from emails over the past few days with Wildcat's Operations Mangers and 2 people in the Forest Service. Thought it appropriate to share what I heard from official sources. Yes - the pass is the same...

    Wildcat pass required for hikers?

Parking was not mentioned at all, but I did not ask that question.

    Wildcat pass required for hikers?

No - ascending the trail system requires a ski pass. Hiking down during open hours does not require a pass. You are asked to check in with Ski Patrol at the ski patrol building on the summit so they can tell you what trail to go down. If for example they are blowing snow on the Pole Cat or...

    Wildcat pass required for hikers?

What I didn't say was in my email to both Wildcat and the FS, I asked about dogs on a short leash under control, walking beside the owner on the wood side of the ski trail. Some people get away with saying that their dog is a "service" dog. That is so wrong and very bad for those that have...

    Wildcat pass required for hikers?

I have exchanged a few emails with both Wildcat and the Forest Service. Here is a summary of what I have been told. From Wildcat: Wildcat does not wish to deter hiking. The uphill ski pass is designed for folks that want to hike/skin up and ski down the mountain. Downhill hikers are asked to...

    Wildcat pass required for hikers?

There was an accident once, but like Tim - we've crossed it many times in Summer and Winter, and have never seen any issues. There are many more spots on trails in the Whites that have a much higher risk. Tim - are you sure of that 11.6 mile number? I seem to get 12.8 miles for an out an back.
