Potential New Year's blizzard to blanket New England mountains

Ditto the "strange storm" comments... maybe six inches of new snow in Waterville Valley after almost three days of light, steady snow (but only a couple of bands of heavy the whole time). Things blew around a LOT, though, so skiing at WV yesterday was an exercise in wild inconsistency, with the...

Potential New Year's blizzard to blanket New England mountains

Steady, light snow in Waterville Valley all day... 3-4, maybe even 5-6" total accumulation. But no big dumping. Still, conditions are improving. Latest NWS forecast calls for light to moderate accumulations tonight and tomorrow. The wind has been picking up this evening, but not holding out...

    Hit or Miss? Snow 12/20/09

I have it on good authority that Dave Metsky will proactively close all such spring-begging threads till at least the Ides of March. If you're hankering for snow (I noticed it has pretty much all melted inside 495 when I was down this week), we still have a LOT on the ground in the Whites...

    Geminids are coming

I am ashamed to admit that I slept quite soundly through this, only to wake up at 5:48am this morning to look out the window and see what looked like a hot orange ember streak across the sky from northwest to southeast... then I remembered the meteor shower. Nice wake-up call, anyway...

A Real Corker Coming This Week?

Unscientific measure (my 12-year old came in from sledding and pointed to the top of his boots): about 8" to 9" in Waterville Valley at 1600 feet. Wind is picking up now and we have a combo of falling and blowing snow at 2:50pm. A friend skied this AM and reported 6"+ before noon on Tecumseh...

A Real Corker Coming This Week?

Started snowing at about 6am at 1500 feet in Waterville Valley, snowed lightly and has moved on to moderate snow now. Breezes are still light on the valley floor. Accumulations look to be about 2-3" as of 10am Wednesday 12/9.

A Real Corker Coming This Week?

NWS out of Gray just jumped this from "Watch" to "Warning", and upgraded snowfall amounts in the foothills and Whites to 9" to 15" with some sleet and freezing rain (e.g., doesn't sound like much of a changeover is now predicted). Does this qualify as a corker? I believe it does.

Woman Hiker Killed by Coyotes in Nova Scotia

I have had dogs "come at me" hard and fast a few times, and have been lucky enough that a very loud, angry "Stop" cowed them into retreat. My "best" near-dog-attack story, though, comes from my early 20s, when we lived in Taiwan for a year. First off, you need to know that dogs in Taiwan (at...

Pattern Change Snow Storm on the Way

Bretton Woods went from scraping by on three short slopes off the Learning Center Quad (that'd be "bunny slope" to you and me) to a claimed 27 trails today. We were amazed to find snow everywhere, deep, soft snow even where it had been groomed. They got a very lucky bounce out of this storm...

Planning an above-treeline hike Saturday 11/28? Be careful...

Good point. Today's Higher Summits forecast seemed to reconsider the "thoroughly prepared" point a bit, too: Again, venturing above tree line today will be extremely dangerous, even if you are fully prepared. The force of these type of winds on the human body is exceptionally taxing and should...

Pattern Change Snow Storm on the Way

11am: Windy, light mixed precip... no snow sticking on Valley floor, but looks like it stuck above about 2500 feet. Overcast currently hanging at about 3000 feet.

Pattern Change Snow Storm on the Way

I can answer that for you... it had changed over to snow as low as the base lodge by 5pm -- but it didn't stick much at 2000 feet. Higher up received a good coating, as this shot shows: Later last night, we saw lights up on High Country for the first time in six months, probably the...

Pattern Change Snow Storm on the Way

The clouds just parted up on Tecumseh briefly, revealing white on the ski trails above 3200 feet. Can't tell how much -- probably just a wet layer, but hooray none the less.

Planning an above-treeline hike Saturday 11/28? Be careful...

Reposting from the Mt Washington Observatory Higher Summits forecast (http://www.mountwashington.org/weather/summit_forecast.php): ...This will make for an extremely dangerous situation on the higher summits tomorrow. It should be noted that wind chills will approach 20 below at times, which...

Pattern Change Snow Storm on the Way

Thanks, Matt... I was scanning all my weather sites, but your synopsis is much clearer (and much more optimistic, for us snow-lovers). About time! Happy Thanksgiving...

    triage via tecumseh

Ouch, Bryan... best of luck for a speedy recovery. For what it's worth, I would strongly agree with your and DougPaul's assessment of Speare -- we've lived back in the area for three years and have been to Speare for the usual complement of things you get with young kids, and a couple of...

    Camping stove accidents

Not my accident, but one I observed up-close-and-personal a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away... Hermit Lake Shelters, late October 1983 or so... We had just settled in and set up our bedrolls, eaten something that didn't require cooking (can't remember anymore what it was), and were...

    It's heerrre . . . Round 2

I will let SARDog off the hook for my drink... but this one fizzled big-time between Monday night 11/9 and Tuesday morning 11/10, when the computer models started to agree on 'fair weather and high pressure' rather than "cold with an inch of liquid precip". Too bad, too... the ski areas really...

Tripyramids, for Dejah’s 48…ah, not so fast

Wonderful TR, as always... Tut's right -- in bad weather, it's generally advisable to pass on North Slide (challenging under the best of conditions) and opt instead for the Scaur Ridge and Pine Bend Brook trails. Scaur Ridge takes off from the Livermore Trail about a quarter mile or so past...
