Look before you "take care of business"

Once again, I am struck by the extremely reasoned and gentle tone the investigator took with Moody. No question, Moody's got issues, and playing bad-cop with him wasn't going to help. Mr. Fors seems to be a very impressive agent, glad he's on our side. I would have added to the witty poo...

    Bye Bye Bugs

Sadly, it only got down to about 37 in Waterville Valley last night... but we have another shot at it tonight. Freeze, you nasty, irritating little critters!

Too many Bears Showing Up in Bethlehem, NH

And here I thought they did that in the woods. Is NOTHING sacred? On a (much) more serious note, I watched -- half dozed through -- a pretty good Animal Planet piece on bear attacks in Anchorage, Alaska , where they have something like 20 adult brown bears living right in the city limits...

    Tripoli Road washout?

Thanks for pointing this out, you no doubt saved me at least half an hour of my life this week, because I never would have thought to look at conditions.

Question Regarding Ultra-Light Aircraft Operating in WMNF

I can vouch for that, Walker... we see A-10s doing low-altitude training all the time in Waterville Valley. I always assumed it's a reasonable Afghanistan analog. You haven't lived till you've been at 3800 feet on a ski trail, looking down on a pair of A-10s, a few hundred feet away and a...

Perseid Meteor Shower peaks this week

Thanks, Doug... I defer to your sources... will still hold out hope that clearer skies and my ability to be outside late at night will coincide with the "long tail" of the event. Cheers...

Perseid Meteor Shower peaks this week

The 2009 Perseid meteor shower runs from July 27th to August 24th -- but it peaks this week, and likely tonight (July 12th). If you have a chance, get out and have a look... New Hampshire weather doesn't look great for viewing tonight, but will be better tomorrow and beyond. Enjoy!

    Bird question

Been seeing a lot of these guys around the last couple weeks, including (sadly) a dead one on the side of 93 just north of Concord, with that speckled breast facing the fast lane on the median side. I wonder if they're migrating? Haven't seen this particular configuration until just recently...

    digital camera

Mohamed... I can't remember the exact model of Lumix, but it is the older version of this, I think: Lumix DMC-ZR1 Hers is 10MPixel not 12... Guessing yours is one of the slightly bigger "mid-range" cameras. DaveG, we have and love a Nikon D80 for "bench work" -- kid shows, home shooting...

Curious George Cottage Family Festival @ Waterville Valley August 7th - 9th

One last bump... Weather looks great... bring the kids up and have some fun!

Agree with (and cheerfully defer to experts such as Dave) all that has been said... as a once-upon-a-time-more-serious photographer, only thing I would add is: consider and balance issues such as form-factor carefully. There are a lot of directions you can go, but you can't have it all. There...

distiguishing Bicknell"s thrush from hermit thrush?

Thanks for the distinguishing features, Early Bird... I have had a rash of thrushes crashing into my house this summer, and I was pretty sure they were Bicknell's Thrush -- though none of the photos I was able to find on the web (not even Patrick's typically excellent shots here) seemed to...

Curious George Cottage Family Festival @ Waterville Valley August 7th - 9th

<Bump> Long-range weather for next weekend looks lovely... Sunny and highs in the 60s. Last year, the Firemen's Barbeque (where George and the Man with the Yellow Hat make an appearance), and the PSU mobile planetarium shows were both great... the PSU professor who did the show was awesome...

    Lyme...bulls eye rash...spider bites?

I have mentioned before, I have a good friend who is a pediatrician on Boston's South Shore (second only to southern Connecticut for Lyme infections, I understand). It sounds like her practice's policy is treat first, ask questions later -- they seem to espouse a rather extreme (in a good way)...

Looking for a little "Boot Help"

BigEarl... I don't have specific experience with either of these Asolo models, but I do have experience in other Asolos... I have found my current pair (hybrid nylon/leather, non-Goretex) extremely durable and generally comfortable on day-hikes and hikes with a fairly serious pack. I clock in...

    Rain Rain

If it's any comfort, Saturday AM has dawned nice in the Whites... foggy early but already burning off, and I see blue skies above. Weather in the Southern Whites looks good today, valley highs in the high 70s, clear tonight in the 50s, and not bad till later tomorrow when we may get more...

List - Campgrounds in the White Mountains (Car Camping)

Osceola Vista campground in Waterville Valley, right off the Tripoli Road... gorgeous panoramic views, nearby access to Osceola, the Tripyramids. Tends to be quiet, with families and smaller groups or Scout troops as the main constituency. My vote for not great car camping: Tripoli Road...

Curious George Cottage Family Festival @ Waterville Valley August 7th - 9th

Many folks don't realize that Curious George creators Hans and Margret Rey were long-time summer residents of the White Mountains, where they were avid conservationists and very popular with local kids, whom Hans welcomed into his studio while he worked. The Reys' legacy lives on in the work of...

Favorite valley walks in the Whites?

I second Brian's suggestion of Greeley Ponds R/T from either end, with a side trip to Big Pines, or even the Scaur. I did it last year and was actually thinking of doing it this weekend. There's something cool about walking across the "wilderness" a few miles and cutting the corner on what...
