    Balsam - Catskills

We packed (somewhat - the snow is 4-5 feet deep so more shoes still needed) the trail up from McKenley Hollow. Trailhead parking not plowed yet, but we shoveled out 2 spots.

    heart monitor

I don't have an expensive one - a Polar F6 (around $125), but one of it's features is that it doesn't pick up other HRMs at the gym or in classes. And, with the wristwatch, no need to hold the metal readers on the machines.

    heart monitor

I wore mine when we did Santa-Panth-Couch. It came out to almost 6000 calories so if there is a lot of uphill you can really get your numbers up. Tom, I was really frustrated because I could easily to do long distances over gradual hills but then would hit the Dacks and some of the Cats and...

    heart monitor

Hi - I got a heart rate monitor a couple of months ago and I like having it quite a bit. I started spin classes to find a way to train better for hiking and the instructor suggested one. He also said the chest ones are more accurate, though some people really don't like wearing them - just...

    Catamount Trail Association position

Not sure where to post this, so I'll put it here for anyone who is interested. I'm a member and CTA (in Vermont) sent this out. It's a great organization for those who don't know it. http://www.catamounttrail.org/ <<Have you ever dreamed of a position that asked you to ski, snowshoe, or hike...

Oh No, another Poke-O-Moonshine hike! 8-9-09

Wish I could have joined you and Skip for that one as the VT views are great for such a small peak. Always like seeing my home state :-)

    Newly released book

Sounds like a variation on Walk in the Woods, but the interview (link below) is thoughtful. May 25, 2009 | Some midlife crises involve a fast car, others an affair. Facing middle age, writer Mark Obmascik decided to hike, climb and scramble up all the Colorado mountain peaks over 14,000 feet...

    Blackhead Range

Blackhead -traction definitely necessary. I did ok with spikes, but had to go off trail a couple of times. Crampons would have been better, but that is the only section that needed more than spikes. Looks like it will be around for a while too.

History of the Tibetan Uprising and What Followed

Thanks for posting that Brian. I knew some of the basics but not all the early details - mankind can be so awful sometimes. Maria

    BC Skins

Thanks everyone -learned a bunch from this. I grew up doing bc without realizing it in VT since we would head out our backyard and make our own tracks in the woods for miles - but time to really know what I'm doing. Got it figured out now and the smallest skins I see sold are 60mm, so I'll go...

    BC Skins

I have the 07-8 version: http://www.telemarkski.com/html/rvw_rossignol_bc_65_ar.html They say the dimensions are: 65/53/60. Not sure what that means though..... I know they aren't particularly heavy duty, so it would be nice to get skins that would work if I do upgrade in a year or two...

    BC Skins

Ok, thanks for all the advice. My skies are are Rossignol standard bc ones, basic wide tip, but not super wide, 186 cm. Can I use any skins? Meaning is the tip attachment versatile? And I'll pm you Tom.

    Inspiring story

A friend is a member of the Green Mt. Club in VT and wrote up the profile in the link below. Still going strong at 80! http://gmcburlington.org/2009/02/28/trip-leader-profile-dot-myer/

    BC Skins

With gear sales in full swing, I'm deciding it's time to invest in some bc ski skins so that I can do tougher terrain. Anybody have favorites? There seem to be different ways of attaching - some have tail attachments, some not, so I'm trying to figure out what would be best. Thanks. Maria

Catamount Ski Trail (Vermont) - NY Times Article

Yes, thanks for posting. I just heard about it this year from friends and it's a great idea. I'm doing my first 2 sections next weekend in southern VT (assuming there is still snow!). Some sections are tougher bc and require skins, but others are fairly flat.

Hey Gillian. Nice to hear from you. Yes, snowshoeing and skiing - though down with a cold this weekend which was a bummer since it was beautiful on Saturday. In 2 weeks I'll be up in southern VT doing 2 days on the Catamount Trail with friends. Didn't know about it really but it's a bc trail...

    Stretching the mid-back?

Make sure to stretch the back both directions (gently) ie not just forward bends but slight backbends. A low stress way to do it is to roll up a blanket like a bedroll and put it right below the shoulder blades. Lie on the floor and stretch over it with your back. We spend so much of our days...
