    Winter Camping

I'd say the general answer for me will be yes I leave them outside of the sleeping bag but I do utilize them for a pillow most of the time (unless I'm hammocking) and this does add a few degrees of warmth.

    Winter Camping

Yes, I also forgot to add that you can test all your winter camping gear behind your house (if you live in a house near the woods). Just set up your stuff and spend a night. In case it gets bad you can always go home a few steps away.

    Winter Camping

good point. I always at least carry the bags in my pack in case it gets really bad out there. I wear vapor barrier socks while hammock camping in the winter and it works great.

    Winter Camping

I'd like to add that some minimalistic setups work just fine too. For example a) stomping out a trench, laying in a tarp, then foam matt(s) then sleeping bag and a second tarp to cover yourself works well. b) same as above except for just laying next to a tree trunk where there is very little...

    Winter Camping

singles freeze but it doesn't take too long for them to warm up once you put them back on in the morning. In my book it wouldn't stop me from going.

I've had Ferino daypack for almost 10 years - excellent pack.

    Pyramid shelters in winter

I used the HMG Pyramid Shelter in the Winter in the Pemi. I would not use anything else besides a hammock. We stomped the ground flat with snowshoes and then used ski poles as the mid pole, then used branches and snowstakes to bury the guy lines, waited for them to harden and then adjusted the...

    Maine Woods National Monument

IT'S OFFICIAL NOW BSP is happy too. They posted a statement on their page. I did not know that but Percival Baxter wanted the area east of BSP protected but did not have enough money to buy that land. Now it is protected.

National Park Proposal East of Baxter Heating up

I'm sure there are several ideas on how to get to the park but the way I've been getting there is the way to North Gate of Baxter State Park and that road seems to be public all the way.

National Park Proposal East of Baxter Heating up

yeah, I could be wrong on that. Growing up in the relatively mature pine forests I've been told since I was a kid that ticks will be in the oak and leafy forests clinging to branches and leaves and undergrowth but not in the pine forest. :-) I have never really questioned that but I quick google...

National Park Proposal East of Baxter Heating up

This might be low on a totem pole but ticks do not live in a pine forest :)

National Park Proposal East of Baxter Heating up

It doesn't NEED to be managed as a National Monument to create areas of mature forest. Any authorized agency could do this. The reason for National Monument is beyond forest management. It is the brand power of National Park to bring tourist dollars into economically starved region that is...

National Park Proposal East of Baxter Heating up

Probably because of just what you described - harvested woods that grow back are green, thick brush...basically young forest. For my taste it is much more desirable to have as much of a MATURE forest as possible. Big trees, big tree trunks creating enough shade to create 'walkable forest' one...

National Park Proposal East of Baxter Heating up

sounds about right. :-) The benefits and history of prior endeavors are far to obvious to me. I am content with my vote/voice for the park and let the chips fall where they may.

Incredibly odd development in the Geraldine Largay case

lack of food and especially fatigue. As we age... and this happens to different people at different ages ... we get certain levels of dementia. It is just a fact of life. The fact that Inchworm already was on occasions having issues staying on trail and getting disoriented already exposes...

National Park Proposal East of Baxter Heating up

I think this was the the same hearing, only separated into two parts. Sort of like a drama play with an intermission. First part was where Poliquin and Lepage got their Derps out and the second part was where people for pro and against were allowed to speak. Initially the against folks were not...

    Lost hiker on Madison

I don't want anyone but me or my emergency contact to call for a rescue. I always tell my wife to give me 48 hours. I certainly don't want someone in some group to overreact and call a rescue on me and then somehow get a bill for something I did not initiate.
