National Park Proposal East of Baxter Heating up

Yeh. Well my response was not about the much scaled down proposal. The scaled down proposal won't work that way. It's a much smaller and comparatively uninteresting piece of land. However, there is a lot that could be done to make it attractive in its own microcosmic way. To date , the billing...

National Park Proposal East of Baxter Heating up

the characterization is not of ALL local people. :-) and I think it's not a majority either. More like a vocal minority, detrimental to progress.

National Park Proposal East of Baxter Heating up

I can not go into specifics due reasons I do not want to mention and also because it would take time to think it through properly. I'll ramble a bit, however, for the time that I can devote to this post: This might sound ridiculous especially knowing how revered Yellowstone is but in general...

National Park Proposal East of Baxter Heating up

are you kidding? The whole region is a goldmine for opportunities (known and undiscovered) that would be either preserved or enhanced and done so with the umbrella of further preservation and uniform quality of wildlife management. I wish someone from the group hired me for a couple of years...

National Park Proposal East of Baxter Heating up

I agree that the main deficiency so far has been the presentation of the outdoor opportunities within this newly proposed land.

National Park Proposal East of Baxter Heating up

good. in fact it would be best to declare the entire north woods (encompasing Greenville, Rockwood and Allagash etc...) as a national monument. let's get it done. The local interests demonstrated in the past 20 - 30 years a complete ineptitude of protecting the land and providing quality of...

So what are your early winter "bonus" hikes ?

I did Bondcliff last Saturday and did not need traction at all. Besides a couple of 4ft patches towards the top the trail was clear. The clouds lifted for about 20 minutes just when I reached the the top. I considered that to be a bonus ;-)

Snow tire season again in the whites

Nokian Haakapelitas for me since they were first recommended on this forum a few years ago. I don't have them on yet but I'm hoping I can squeeze in somewhere tomorrow to have them put on.

    Thoughts on Energy Gel's

I don't eat until after I reach the summit. I drink 32 oz of water while driving to the trailhead. This helps me not needing to drink during most of the way up.

    Soft Shell Pant Recommendation

I would go for bibs if the issue of pants riding down while wearing a backpack. I've been wearing Core Concepts Uncle Bens Bibs for a few years now. Soft shell with Shoeller fabric in the right spots... Great pants but discontinued for a few years now. Also my Arcteryx Bibs I bought off eBay...

Your chances of dying, ranked by sport and activity

It is interesting to note that the rate of heart attacks is 7.7 per thousand. That could be on the couch, on the bus, on a hiking trail ... ;-)

I was apprehensive of Wild (the movie) and was pleasantly surprised that I liked it. (did not read the book)

Walk in the Woods - the movie

Should I see this movie ? :-) I appreciated the writing style but hated the book and Bryson and ultimately did not finish the book. Is the movie making the two characters more likable than the original characters?
