    Hikes that overlook fireworks?

If you ever want to see the Boston 4th of July fireworks the blue skyline trail of the Blue Hills trail network in MA has a good view of Boston from one of the hills on that trail.

New Hotel @ Mt. Washington Auto Road

I like that idea as well but I don't want to see Highland Center type prices.

    Mt. Willard 6-28-09

Nice hike to do with young kids. I took my 5 y.o. son on this trail and he loved it. It's certainly not too strenuous and offers fantastic views into Crawford Notch. Parts of it were muddy but nothing that was impassable. There are also a few goodies on the way up like a nice waterfall to stand...

Taking kids into Tuckerman Ravine in bad weather

I tend to be conservative as a parent and sometimes a bit protective; my son is 5 y.o. BTW. But I think it's great that parents have their kids on the trails instead of in front of a TV playing video games, eating chips, drinking soda and gaining weight. In my neighborhood parents basically just...

    sweat gets in my eyes

I always wear a hat when hiking; works for me. You have to wear orange during the hunting season so I just wear the same orange hat I do during the hunting season.

    Hiking in Long Pants

EMS used to sell these pants called Camp 5. They are strechable and have good sized cargo pockets. I bought 4 pairs when they sold them. For some reason they stopped selling them but I still have all four pairs and all are still in good shape. I hike in those more than anything else.

Missing Hiker - Mt Washington Area

Sad day for the hiking community. My thoughts and prayers to Mr. Shintani's family. I also salute all of those who participated in the search mission.

    Rain All Weekend

I agree with the waterfall crowd; you're going to get wet anyway. In fact whenever I go to the Whites and it is raining I'll take in a waterfall trail. The Glen Ellis Falls is my favorite. This book is helpful. http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/516M1CN594L._SS500_.jpg

What's your opinion of "Hiker Dies/Gets Lost" threads ?

I agree with all of this. Maybe if the mods just allowed the first post and then locked the thread, much like is done with the "lost piece of equipment" threads, this would be more beneficial.

    Mt. Willard?

Making a trip to the Whites in a few weeks (last weekend in June) and I plan to hike Mt. Willard with my 5 y.o. son since I hear it's a good hike to do with kids. I'm reading about the Mt. Willard trail in two different hiking guides. One is AMC's Best Day Hikes In The White Mountains the other...

Don't have a hiking dog? How 'bout a cat?

Interesting, I'll have to take the guy in my avatar out sometime.

New Place in Town (Franconia) for Breakfast

I've always loved the Notch View Country Kitchen. But I'll give this place a try, thanks for posting.

Thanks very much. I wish I could have gone hiking on my birthday but (sadly) business comes first.

    Hiking in Quebec?

I'd like to do some hiking in Quebec, more specifically in the Parc national du Mont-Mégantic (Mt. Megantic) area. I'll be going up in July. I have few questions: 1. In general, how is the hiking in this region? 2. Does Quebec use any type of blazing system? How well marked are trails in this...

Well said. A big thumbs up to those people. :) I'm glad this story had a happy ending.

Hiker missing in Franconia Notch area

Hopefully this story will have a happy ending but things aren't looking good. As for the comments in the UL they are what I would expect from people who don't hike. But chances are those idiots would comment the same way about any hobby where is a person gets into some danger. The only thing...

Old Man of the Mountain "Restoration"

Talk about trying to turn the Whites into Disney World. Screw that! There is enough commercialism in the WMNF, no more is needed. The Old Man is (sadly) gone, let him RIP, do not do anything to ruin or exploit the cherished memories that most of us have of him.
