    Mittens for really cold hands

Chemical handwarmers......don't leave home without them!:D Seriously though, I have several frost-nipped finger tips that go numb very quickly. Since I started using these things I have not had a problem. I bring one in each pocket and several extras on each trip.

Finishing the 67 in Baxter - Day 1

Thanks all! Thanks so much for the comments. It was a great way to finish. Now I am left thinking about whats next? Definitely going to continue on the winter 4k's, and also continue on the 100NEHH, but at a more relaxed pace. I may take a hike in the Catskills as well. But my #1 goal is to...

    Hikers benighted on Baxter!

Kevin, definitely happened as told. He might of said that he knew it was her 1st hike (but failed to consider the consequences). Unfortunately the wife said she would "never hike again" and all she wanted at that point was a steak and a couple of beers. Also, no names, no foul. Stu

    Hikers benighted on Baxter!

This is an incredibly chilling story told to me by two people I met on the trail in Baxter S.P. this past wed. I am including just the facts as I remember them and I’m not going to make any judgments on what amounted to some really weak decision making. While making my way up the Saddle Trail I...

Finishing the 67 in Baxter - Day 1

Finishing the 67 in Baxter - Day 2/3 Day 2 - I decided to hike Hamlin solo and let the guys rest up for the big finish on Baxter. Went up the Saddle Trail, over to Hamlin summit and down the Hamlin Ridge trail. This was a tremendous hike with miles of above-treeline exposure and wonderful views...

Finishing the 67 in Baxter - Day 1

Here's my report of our trip to Maine last week. I will try to post pics when I get them from the group photographers. After a vfft planned Baxter trip fell through I was able to enlist some old hiking buds to come along and help me celebrate my 67 finish. Day 1 - We stayed at Roaring Brook...

    Monadnock x 4

Yea, I've been up there a few times, but never climbed it more than once in a day. After reading this I might have to go back soon. Did you meet the guy that climbs it every day, all year? Cheers, Stu

    I hiked with an umbrella...proudly

I have to say I have also hiked with an umbrella a few times. Got a few weird looks and comments, but it worked great...but not above tree line. Great ventilation and it kept the rain out of my eyes.

    Stratton, ME?

Hey! Finally getting a little time off soon, :p and will be heading up to this area for a little peakbagging. Anyone have any first-hand knowledge of the road construction situation up there, and how I can avoid it?..... Also, on one previous trip I took route 16N out of Gorham, NH and another...

Do you think it was a Fisher?

Grey Fox Hey now! I vote grey fox. Although southern Maine is about the limit to the northern range, I believe you saw a Grey Fox. Greys often have a good deal of red coloring. As a side note Grey Fox are very "cat" like, in fact they will not hesitate to climb trees! A very cool and handsome...
