    NEHH Peaks in Maine

Translated to English in Chrome... Road Conditions Gosford Area and Louise: The main roads will be open Saturday, May 16, 2016. I looked because I have plans to be up there in a couple weekends. The website claims the roads are currently open.

    Animal Encounters on the Trail

Milk snakes are actually one of the more common creatures I have seen on the trail. I've found them on Monadnock multiple times as well as in the Whites. I even found a young one about 50 feet from the high point on Monadnock one day when there were very few people up there.

Monadnock Main Trails Continuous Hike -Planning

As someone else that has redlined Monadnock (I only counted it if I did it while going up the mtn), this is an interesting idea. I've started keeping track of redlining in winter and also in the dark (sunrises and sunsets). I typically just try to pick routes that avoid as many hikers as...

"Best" Peaks To Hike In VT And NY

Actually, they are on the New England 50 Finest List. From hiking in that area last summer, they seem like they would be well worth the hike.

    sawyer r. rd. status

If it was me, there would be two lost and they would be in a zip-lock bag. I never took mine out of my pack for the two days I was out. I did come down Jackson, but saw a few other hikers out as well.

    sawyer r. rd. status

The gate on the southern end was open as of yesterday (5/6/15) when I got back to my car at the normal trail head parking lot.

    Animal Encounters on the Trail

Last year while hiking the NE67, I had a few good animal encounters. I finally saw my first moose while hiking a 4K (Mt. Ellen VT). Hiking North Brother I had a black bear appear out of the woods about 25 feet in front of me. Luckily I was able to convince him to go back off into the woods...

    AT in VT

Thanks for the info. After some clicking around I did find that list. I was hoping for a more definitive list of what is officially closed though. But every bit helps. I wasn't planning out going out and mucking up muddy trails if those were the conditions, but I do still enjoy getting out...

Follow Up Story on Kate Matrosova

The article provides more info than I had previously read about her mountaineering accomplishments. To me, this makes the decision to continue above treeline even more foolish. Having been through those hikes, she really should have been more knowledgeable about when to turn around and stay...

    AT in VT

Is there a list or map somewhere that might show what lands/trails are actually state lands? The announcement saying "These lands include" is a bit open ended for those who aren't as familiar with Vermont. It implies there are others not listed. I was actually thinking of a hike in VT this...

Good Winter for Moose in NH

I believe the ticks drop off in "spring" to lay their eggs. If they fall on snow rather than ground, they have to find a spot quickly or they will die. At the top of the state a week ago, there was still 3-4 feet of snow in places (I was up there snowmobiling and got stuck that deep). We...

    Abraham (Abram) 4/12/15

The tower was still standing on Aug 9, 2014. If I recall though, shortly after that there was a trip report I saw which showed the tower tipped over. When I was there some of the support cables were already broken as well as some bracing. So given the condition of it and the already above...

    Animal Encounters on the Trail

I saw one near the summit of Mt. Monadnock (3,165 ft) two winters ago I think it was. No time to get out the camera before it flew away.

Expanded Cell Coverage in far northern NH soon

I had a pre-paid AT&T cell phone for a while since I don't use the phone much. I couldn't get anywhere near reliable service with it anywhere above Franconia Notch. I could be next to a cell tower showing full bars, but it wouldn't let me make a call. I suspect part of that was the pre-paid...

Expanded Cell Coverage in far northern NH soon

I go up north regularly snowmobiling in Pittsburg. I turn off my cell phone in Colebrook since service is unreliable to non-existent above that it seems. In some places you get service from Canada, which of course means you get extra charges. Some places on the snowmobile trails even have...

Spring is roaing in like a lion!

Knowing people that make maple syrup in the spring, I can say we definitely haven't had the number of warm days like normal in the SW part of the state. Very few syrup makers around here have boiled into April if at all. It's normally gotten to warm by then for the sap to run. It's been so...

    67 In One Year

If you notice, only 4 days earlier I was on Mt. Moosilauke. We had discussed me not hiking two weeks on either side of her due date to play it safe, but our daughter came 11 days early. It seemed like the smart thing to do to stay home for a while helping out with everything. Keeping my wife...

    67 In One Year

While I fully admit there are hikers with more impressive stats than me on here, I thought I would share the accomplishment I just completed over the last year. Background: While hiking my first round of the 48, I thought "it could be fun to do all 48 in one year at some point." Well, nearing...
