    Trails with Ladders

For the trail on Mt. Monadnock, you call it the Cliff Trail. It's actually the Cliff Walk Trail. Even without the ladder, a great trail.

It's official: Abol trail to be relocated

The ranger I talked to a few weeks ago said they might allow people to use the old route as a bushwhack of sorts. It would have signs strongly recommending that you don't though and advising of the dangers. The new trail will have some switchbacks put into it and should add no more than 0.5...

27 Trekkers Dead From Unexpected Blizzard on Annapurna Circuit

Thanks for the visual. Makes much more sense now.

What’s going on with these rocks?

I've noticed these many times myself and then forget to ask about them. I meant to as a ranger a couple weeks ago while in Baxter State Park, but again forgot once I went to talk to him. There are a number of these on the Chimney Pond Trail on Katahdin.

27 Trekkers Dead From Unexpected Blizzard on Annapurna Circuit

Would you happen to have any pictures of the trail in that section to give others an idea of how bad it is? The articles make it sound bad, but visuals always make it more clear for me.

White Mountain Redlining Workbook (29th Edition)

While it would be easy to mark off segments in the workbook, it would also make for MUCH longer pages within it also making it harder to find a section in the list. I've had to look through the list twice sometimes as it is to find a particular trail. It would also include some very short...

Suggestions - Overnighter in the Whites w/ hut stay

I would say yes. The view from A is mostly of the notch, while the view from D includes the presidentials. The view of the notch is great, but so is the more encompassing view from D.

    Trails with Ladders

He means Saddleback, The Horn. The second peak of the two Saddlebacks in Maine. Here is the ladder I believe he is talking about. And the rungs.

    Trails with Ladders

Yes, one small wooden ladder (4-5 "rungs") not far above Zeacliff Pond. I was just there Saturday. It's not big enough to add to the list in my opinion as well.

    VFTT ad

I bet we've all hiked past that woman wearing so much perfume you could smell her before you saw her though. I know I have multiple times.

You know might be addicted to hiking...

In planning where to go on our honeymoon, my wife looked up "hiking in the caribbean" because she knew I would get bored after the first day on the beach. As a side note... Dominica is an awesome island for that and even has a 4K. :)

2015 Implementation of NH HikeSafe Card

If my ATV registration is valid June - May, then so should my rescue coverage. I bet they wouldn't tell a snowmobile rider his registration doesn't cover him on Jan 2 when he needs help all because a different kind of coverage would need to be repurchased then.

2015 Implementation of NH HikeSafe Card

Already bought my ATV registration for the year, so I guess I'm good. Although if I am hiking and not riding my ATV, that only makes so much sense to even me.

    Umbagog: water, other q's

We had our own boat both times I have stayed there. Some sites can be quite a ways from the state park building and docks. So depending on the site, you might be in for significant paddling and possibly choppy water if it is windy. If I recall, the state park has a pontoon boat that they can...

topo map survey - Need your input

    1. I have a regular topo in the top pocket of my pack. I do a close up printout of the area I am hiking though on a 8.5x11 piece of paper folded in half twice that is in my pants pocket (possibly in a ziplock bag) 2. I think 4x7 is the size I normally carry. If I were to carry it in my pocket...

    Pittsburg Peaks - Road Updates

Even with a cabin lease giving access, they only plow where logging. The rest of the road will just keep getting snow on top of it, so you'd only be able to drive that far at best.

    Pittsburg Peaks - Road Updates

Nope. In winter this road (and many others) are snowmobile trails or currently in use for logging equipment and active logging jobs.

Two Maine Hike "Elevation Gain" Inquiries

I didn't bother going the day I was there because the view was only about 50 feet at that time.

Two Maine Hike "Elevation Gain" Inquiries

I've done all of these peaks this summer, so here is my info to weigh in... For the Horn and Bigelows, my GPS showed 11.549 miles with 3,632 ft of vertical gain. I parked near Stratton Pond I went up horns pond trail then across the ridge and down fire wardens. Fire wardens is steep at the end...

Weather reports in Stratton ME area, without internet

We listen to this station while at camp in northern NH and they normally do a regular forecast and then a more northern in the mountains forecast. It isn't for the summits of course, but it is closer to your area.
