What time were you thinking and how quick do you hike? I'm thinking about this as a possibility.

Just for Laughs, Most Annoying Hiking Partner Behaviors

This reminded me of another one. I have gotten slowed down behind people that put so much time into finding the right spot for their poles on the ground while walking that they easily could have already been past the obstacle or section by the time they even start it. I do realize some people...

Just for Laughs, Most Annoying Hiking Partner Behaviors

The music man - The person that thinks everyone near them that day that wants to listen to "their" choice of music played out loud on their phone/radio/etc (i prefer peace and quiet) The narrow trail rest breaker - The person that takes a break in the narrowest or most difficult part of the...

    Border Slash Article

I haven't been on as much of the cut as some other friends, but I know you can snowmobile on it quite a ways at a time, but then all of a sudden to get to a completely vertical rock face and have to turn back. With no real "trail" on it and the fact that it needs to follow the border rather...

    New Years Hike Anyone?

I've been planning on hiking Cabot New Years myself for a while now. Heading up to the top of the state through the end of the weekend snowmobiling after that and figured I would get a northern peak on the way. I've hiked before when it was -13 and it wasn't that bad, until I needed to change...

So if I smile while winter hiking I can get rid of my teeth whitening strips? :D

    Border Slash Article

Approximately 40 feet wide would be pretty accurate where it runs along the northern border of NH. We snowmobile up on it in a few places most winters. There are some fun steep hills and feet of powder to ride in. Never seen anyone up there in winter checking things from either country, just...

When does a memorial become trash in a backcountry setting?

This weekend I removed a Boston sweatshirt from a cairn on Mt. Monadnock. It was probably more for the Red Sox than anything else (no real logo). It upset me since someone set it on the cairn and then placed rocks on top to keep it from blowing away. Certainly planned rather than just dropped...

    Sandwich Dome, Jennings Peak 10-11-13

Sandwich Mtn Trail, Jennings Spur, Drakes Brook Trail Date of Hike: 10-11-13 Trail Conditions: A couple damp spots, but mostly dry. Leaves on much of the trail, but some spots have had them washed away by water running down the trail. Some blow downs that require step overs, step unders, and...

Trapped by snow, Oregon hiker conserved to survive

After reading all the links (story, her version, SAR volunteer version) it's quite the story. It's interesting to be able to read about it from multiple perspectives. Good to see how she acted and thought as everything was happening. Seems like she was very smart and careful about what she...

Possible Northern lights this weekend 8/24

This is good timing for me. Working at my parent's property this weekend in Pittsburg. Far north and very little light pollution.

    NH 48 at midnight

How did things work out for you? Which peak was the finish on? I've wanted to do some full moon hikes, but day of the week, weather, and how busy I am never seem to work together right.

    N & S Kinsman via Mt Kinsman Tr. 8/12/2013

I hiked this trail this winter for the first time on a hike of north kinsman and failed attempt at south kinsman. There was snow on all the trees up high and it was a gorgeous hike up through them. I thought at that time that it looked like it would be a real nice trail in the summer as well.

Croydon Mountain: how do you bag this one?

I've thought about something like this just for the chance to maybe see one of the elk that are in the reserve. I always look when on the ATV trail that runs along part of their fencing, but have yet to see anything inside.

Temporary Closure of Lincoln Woods trail

Road construction crews also have much more open real-estate to work with. Parking heavy equipment on a two lane road with breakdown lanes leaves plenty of room. Parking it on a trail no more than the width on one lane on that road doesn't leave much if any room. And then it is still going to...

    Animal Encounters on the Trail

I've seen the normal deer, bear, porcupine, birds, squirrels, etc (no moose though). The two that stick out for me both happened on Mt. Monadnock. One was just a quick flash, but I am pretty sure it was a bobcat running away next to me on a lesser used trail. That is the only animal that...

    China's Mount Tai

I've talked with multiple rangers at Monadnock and some have just stuck to saying "the most climbed mountain in Jaffrey, NH" when the subject comes up.

Tecumseh and Waumbek and Hale, Triple Hit & Run, 7/6/2013

Glad to read you could hear the surroundings. I think that just adds to any hike and is part of why I love trails near streams. I never understand the people that listen to music with ear buds rather than listen to nature.
