    Canister stoves on airplanes

I flew last spring with a leatherman checked in my luggage without any issues.

Adam Wilcox completes first Winter Full Hut Traverse - Solo

I realize there are some amazing hikers out there (and on here), but this still just boggles my mind. I just wish I was good enough to think about trying something like a single day presi-traverse. Many congrats to Adam

Outings for the last few weekends of the winter season

Sent you a PM about possibly joining your hike and helping with car spot so it can be done as a loop.

Staying Semi Thawed on Moosilauke 2/18/13

I've been on Moosilauke twice and never seen any views to the north. Only views to the south one of the two times. Looks like you picked a great day to go and I hope I do the same for trip #3 after seeing your pictures.

    Views from the Carribean?

The guide that we had was one of the staff for the resort we stayed at. He had been there a couple times before. While he was driving us from the airport, we mentioned possibly doing that mountain and he said another guest had already asked to the next day. So we tagged along. Our package...

    Views from the Carribean?

I've been to Dominica as well and got most of the way up Mt. Diablotin (2nd and final view point). The island has many mountains, but only two with trails. The trails are so much different than ours around here. The island doesn't have much for beaches though. Just small ones scattered here...

Windmills getting closer to the Whites - second and third Plymouth-area wind farms

I'm not sure how fast they were turning while we were there. I know that they rotate the blades so they don't spin to slow/fast while operating. It didn't seem windy to me, but the others complained about the wind making them cold. The fact that the temperature was at best 5 degrees that day...

Windmills getting closer to the Whites - second and third Plymouth-area wind farms

I was snowmobiling up north this last weekend and one of the places we went was up Dixville Peak as far as they let you with sleds. While we were sitting there talking, I was amazed at how much noise the tower was making. Granted we were only a couple hundred feet from the tower, but it was...

What have you done in the mountains that could have resulted in a rescue, but didn't?

Luckily, I've never had any majors issues. The closest I had was also on Monadnock on the White Arrow Trail. I had just left the summit and was coming down the first steep bit. My feet slipped out in the snow and I started sliding down on my butt. I stopped just as my right leg found its way...

Wildcat Winter Rules - Background and Discussion

Did you by any chance ask if you can purchase ahead of time in person? Purchase tonight a ticket for tomorrow, or do they not do that for any pass?

NH Proposes Fee If People Need To Be Rescued

I wouldn't, but I also already have a hunting/fishing license and an ATV registration. So by their rules I am covered as long as not negligent.

    Winter Hiking & Snowshoe Advice

This weekend I hiked North Kinsman up the Mt. Kinsman Trail. I had snowshoes on the entire way even though many were bare booting to Bald Peak. But after that the trail saw much less use. Even though people had previously been up the trail, there was anywhere from 2-10 inches of snow to break...

Your Top Ten Photos of 2012!

Here are mine in order that they happened this year. I shoot with a Nikon D80. The lens I normally have on is an 18-135 F3.5-5.6G. I will also sometimes use a 28mm F2.8D and my new 80-200mm F2.8D. I fully admit by the time I was done making my list, I had 12 pics. I had already narrowed it...

    Question about Megalloway in winter

Magalloway road is a very busy and popular snowmobile trail and the trails up there are currently open. The road is smooth from being groomed, by the side road that goes to the base of the mountain (trails) is not groomed and gets full of moguls before long in the winter as many people ride...

Windmills getting closer to the Whites - second and third Plymouth-area wind farms

When my home town started to add a view tax to some people's bills, my father asked if he got a break because he had an eyesore across the street. They said it didn't work that way.

What quotations or phrases keep you going in difficult outdoor situations?

My aunt hums and sings inside of her helmet while snowmobiling. She says we should all be glad that we don't have radios in our helmets for our family.

Windmills getting closer to the Whites - second and third Plymouth-area wind farms

I take this reasoning as "if you allow wind turbines you should allow towers." But I am not the person that posted and that is just how I read it the first time.

12/7/12 Mt Wantastiquet and the Madame Sherri Forest

Living near here I have been to the house ruins, but never done the rest of the hike. It would be good when I don't have the time to head up north. Does the trail for the hike start at the same parking spot as for the ruins?

What quotations or phrases keep you going in difficult outdoor situations?

While I have asked out loud "what drunken idiot thought this was a good idea for a trail?" I'm more likely to say "it's always worth it in the end" as that always seems to be the case. Even a bad hike can be a good hike.

Best direction to do Cabot - Horn loop?

I did this loop going clockwise and didn't have any problems. I don't recall anything that is overly steep or difficult. Maybe coming down off Cabot towards the bulge going this direction would be a little steeper. I don't remember it being that long of a section either. This loop is a real...
