    Another monolith removed

(Probably should combine this with the other "monolith" thread.) It has long been interesting to observe that some user groups' man-made stuff is "OK" to leave in the woods, but other user groups' man-made stuff is "Not OK" to leave in the woods. I think it speaks to which group has the...

    NH Mask Mandate in Effect

"Facebook survey" data are self selected and self reported. The sample, and the actual information reliability from each respondent are poor. I would not consider it to be in any way representative of "the true state of nature." So it's not really a strong enough premise on which to hang an...

    NH Mask Mandate in Effect

Do we actually know this? Or is this conjecture?

Maine is rebuilding old fire towers

Private "friends" groups are responsible for NY towers still being there. The private groups had to fight very hard AGAINST wild eyed greeenies from Albany in the 1980s and 1990s who were adamant to tear down all the towers (the one that had been on Pharaoh was even destroyed by terrorists...

    Gaiter Question / Recommendation

I've had a few different brands. None of the manufacturers really gets everything right. My comments: >Velcro is OK; works pretty well if it is the "Industrial Strength" type (with higher holding power than the "standard" velcro). You need to know that the higher strength version is used...

Glued tabs on tent and how to reattach

I would put stitches at least in the four corners, even if it's too much work to sew the entire margin. Just glue (any glue) might not hold without stitches. Waterproofing over the stitches.

    Rain Gloves

Cold rain is one of the most difficult conditions to be out in. My general rule is, if it's doing that, I don't go. Some of the above suggestions may work for you. I would lean towards the totally impervious rubber or vinyl options. Goretex or other "waterproof" fabrics don't usually hold up...

    Kahtoola k10s and trail runners?

I wear them with trail runners (La Sportive Primer Low) all the time; no discomfort. Haven't tried them with sandals...

    Another Local Area Abused

Agree. Very sad. Grew up in Westchester County, not too far from you. Learned to play in the woods at Pound Ridge. Part of the problem is that there are always bad actors in the mix, and there is ZERO real effort to reach and educate the bad actors. Agencies and Groups put up signs, and...

    Mt Colden loop advice needed

Thanks, Hikerbrian, for the perspective. Speaking for the Adirondacks as a local, I apologize for the bad impression that was made. The State, and the various "green" groups, have done just about everything wrong to address the issues here, consistently doing the exact opposite of what is...

    Survey: guidebook format

I agree with Tom, Ken and Griffin. Make the book accurate, but include a nice big disclaimer. Review several climbing guidebooks for examples of strongly worded disclaimers.

Climber killed in climbing accident on Cannon Cliffs

Yes, tough week. Don't know anything about Arethusa Falls, but there's more on the Rumney incident here: https://www.unionleader.com/news/safety/climber-dies-after-equipment-malfunction/article_e2c5bddd-b3e8-59bf-973e-98e173301fb1.html Sadly, that one looks like a significant error on the...

Great article on Yvon Chouinard and the outdoor industry

Well, actually you hijacked your own thread. Sorry, but it's the case. You were the first one to mention "oil and gas companies," and the first one to use the term "global warming" in the thread. Now you say you don't want to debate global warming. Fine, I don't want to either.

Great article on Yvon Chouinard and the outdoor industry

Very accomplished guy. I have always been impressed by him as a climber and a developer of climbing hardware. But the company, and his legacy are degraded when they put vulgar and childish political messages on their product labels.

    Mt Colden loop advice needed

That seems like a good idea to me, as well. As long ago as 2006, after seeing this solution used effectively in Yosemite, I recommended this type of system in writing to our State regulators. I was told (and you cannot make this stuff up): "Those ideas will never work here. It works out...

    Mt Colden loop advice needed

The "mini's" were probably Adirondack Mountain Club folks. The "lengthy lecture" is one of the problems that has been identified. Sadly, there are those here (in Government and in the various "Green" groups) that think subjecting the public to a lengthy lecture about LNT or some other topic...

Proposed Administration Fee for Summit Building on Mt Washington

No opinion one way or another on fees related to Mt. Washington. But the real irony is that anyone believes that anything is actually "free." The only things that are free are the things that God gives us: Faith, Hope and Love. Everything of material value has a cost. If you don't pay for...

    Mt Colden loop advice needed

As Daniel said, Colden is a fine day trip from the Loj. Agree with others; avoid popular areas like Lake Colden on Labor Day. They will be super busy. Avoid camping at Lake Arnold; it's a wet area, and often stinky. Since you have a little time, consider separating the "Peak" experience and...

Covid Bike Week starting this weekend

Sturgis is an interesting experiment. The just completed rally is far larger than any other (460,000 attendees this year). Of course news headlines are breathlessly reporting "one case here and two cases there" but the actual effects of the rally won't be able to be assessed until about a...

Upticks in Infections in Mass and RI

We had a similar experience in Florida. Late June - early July, to help with care taking for our 90 yr old mother after some health issues (who is now recovering; amazingly tough!). Testing was easy, results in 2 days (negative, thankfully). We drove, which is easier in some ways, but...
