    ADK parking etc

For this year, the shuttle from Marcy Field to the Garden will be operating beginning July 2 at 7 am. The details are not yet up on the Town website, but will be up soon. https://www.townofkeeneny.com/hiker-shuttle-information/

    ADK parking etc

Sorry, I should have been more clear. "AMR" = Ausable Mountain Reserve" which for hiking purposes is the same thing as the Ausable Club. I'm pretty sure there are no permit systems anywhere else. Access at Upper Works, Elk Lake, Loj, Chapel Pond, etc. is only limited by parking.

    ADK parking etc

No change from last year. The only location with a permit system is the AMR. Parking fee is of course in place at the Loj. Otherwise, no new parking, no new parking closures. This year is not nearly as busy as the last two. Still, for the tiny lots (like Elk Lake for example) an early...

Dog: 1; Spencer: 0 (WARNING! GRAPHIC!)

I let the thread settle a bit. Me too dog owner. Our dog is a sweetie, and we follow the rules (although we did get caught once with him off leash in the ADK High Peaks, but there was no harm.) He only reacts badly to Boxers (our fault; we let a Boxer push him around when he was young). I...

    Picaridin Eye Irritation

Permethrin does not work well as a repellent on human skin: https://www.sawyer.com/faq-categories/insect-repellant Permethrin is broken down quickly by skin oils and becomes ineffective. Permethrin is less of a repellent, and more of an insecticide. On clothing, ticks and mosquitos die when...

Are gas prices affecting your hiking?

Classic Straw Man. Should be in the dictionary as an example. So there's NOTHING AT ALL in between EVs and "coal?" Weird world, I guess...

    Utility Backpack for Construction Materials.,,

As an add-on, I've also seen crews attach a square plastic milk crate to a frame or a pack board. It's a good way to support things like chainsaws or other heavy odd shaped things.

    NH hikers murdered

LOL Fox article has better information. Sorry, I guess.... :D In Fox article, follow link to NECN (local) article. This gives details. Looks like they were walking the power lines from behind their place. The police activity was all at the sandy pullout alongside the power lines, not...

    Snow totals from April 18th - 19th?

At 1800' here in Keene, more than a foot on the ground this morning (maybe 15"?). But with the warm temps, it quickly settled. When I cleared the driveway midday, it had settled to about 10"; looks like about 6" deep now. Should all melt in the next couple days.

Lafayette Place and Old Bridle Path Parking Fees proposed

AC Parking is on private land, but it within the blue line. The blue line defines the boundary of the entire Adirondack Park. But the park is a mix of public and private land (currently about 50% public and another 10-15% private protected by easements). Adirondack Loj is also on private land...

    Tupper Lake Hiking Triad

The squalls were amazing on Sunday! Glad you completed these three hikes. I have been up Goodman and Coney, but not Arab. Agree there is nothing at all steep there. Not sure why a guidebook would label these as "steep." I doubt it's related to skiing. More likely they are carrying water...

Any web resources for navigation and/or bushwhacking?

SpencerVT, note: I do fine in the woods, and everything works. OTOH, Nessmuk is THE MAN when it comes to land navigation. Use his input; you will benefit!

    Water Bottles -- 2022

So a more serious answer: Bottle in a coozy works. I agree that I seldom need more than 2l. Bottle in a coozy with a chemical hand heater is very sure to remain thawed, even though it's a little wasteful. I have not had good luck with drinking tubes in winter; I resign myself to bottles...

    Handwarmers?

For me it's always been back of hand. Palm position interferes with grip on ice tools. Direct contact with skin. Never been burned. Need all the heat I can get with Reynaud's.

GAIA Acquired by Outside Magazine Organization

For Outside, I agree that the mag merger is probably the route to surviving a little longer. (But probably not much longer...) I think this is the continuation of very long term trend for print media. Being from near NYC, I remember the "mega merged" newspaper "The World Journal Tribune."...

    Toilets in Paradise

Always a fun topic! At Gore Mtn. ski area in the Adirondacks, our Ski Patrol did a fund raiser many years ago selling a really nice framed poster with pics of the dozen or so old fashioned outhouses around the ski area. Most of these were not even usable in the winter; some of the pics...

    "Old School" Winter 4K Routes

I know in the Adirondacks, things are definitely easier now than in the 1980's. Many herd paths have been adopted, and are now marked and have at least a little maintenance. Routes to all the peaks are well trodden in both summer and winter, and easy to follow. Even as recently as the mid...
