    Handwarmers?

All the above input is good. I have Raynaud's; it got a little worse from age 30 through about 55, but has now leveled off (age 66). I swear by the chemical heaters, both hands and toes. I start using them in October, usually. The Grabber brand has the best quality. The Hot Hands brand...

    snowshoes

What passes for "engineering" at snowshoe companies has <been lacking> for decades. 35 years ago, we used to bemoan the lousy engineering on snowshoes (traction, bindings, you name it) and it has not gotten any better. Plan to modify, and do your own improvements. Add traction, improve...

14 Peaks documentary is out today

When I did a brief foray into "expeditionary mountaineering" 30 years ago, I learned exactly what Sierra said about logistics. >90% of the work is at home, planning the expedition and fundraising. >90% of the work after that is getting to base camp with your health and gear intact. >the...

Alpine Ski Binding Maintenance - Need Advice

Ski Patroller here. In the scheme of things, it's a small expense. Trust the shop; get new gear; be safe. If you want, get second and third opinions from other shops.

N.E. Clean Power Connect in Maine - Should we care ?

Thanks, Tim and Rocket, for this information. Facts matter. Southern NE states like Mass are happy ripping up the north woods so they can virtue signal. As I said upthread, a few Gas or Nuclear plants in their own states would be beneficial for all involved, but they're just not interested...

N.E. Clean Power Connect in Maine - Should we care ?

You know it's not that complicated. Energy comes from gas and nuclear.. In the far distant future it may come from fusion. Energy does not come from solar or wind. Decide if you want energy, or if you want to freeze in the dark. It's black and white; it really is a binary choice.

N.E. Clean Power Connect in Maine - Should we care ?

In a few years on this path, New England will, in fact, be in a world of hurt. We are watching some New England states commit "energy suicide." Folks there should stock up on down sleeping bags and candles, and learn how to treat hypothermia.

While you're there, make sure to take in Seventy Mountain and Bald Peak. Seldom visited, and spectacular.

Winter Hiking Season over before it started.

Wow, that sucks! Get well soon! Ski Patrollers have mostly just completed our annual first aid refresher, so everyone is fresh on their immobilization and transport skills. Good outcome so far. I wish you the best! Tom

Lost Hiker on Isolation - Not a nice night to be out

Well now dude you should smarten up. I like your posts. But seat belts are beneficial, and the benefit / cost ratio is very high.

    Snowing out in Gorham

Got about one inch of fresh at 1800' in Keene, NY. Very pretty! It will melt in the next day or so, of course. Putting out the driveway markers tomorrow. We are on the same schedule!

N.E. Clean Power Connect in Maine - Should we care ?

Maybe Mass will get smart, and build a couple highly efficient low emission nat gas plants in Mass, instead of trying to hack electric lines through the northern New England forest so they can claim to be "green."

    Expectations For A Hard Shell

Years ago, we coined the term "boiler system" for the good "warm and wet" feeling when hiking. Early shells were not very breathable, so wetness was pretty much guaranteed if you were keeping any kind of pace up a hill. Most of our early insulation (early 1980s) was wool. Mostly itchy rag...

more New England mountain lion rumors

In the last couple weeks there have been a few sightings of a "potential" Mountain Lion here in Keene Valley in the Adirondacks. From our local community network about 2 weeks ago: "Early this afternoon our dog started barking like a maniac on steroids. When I started trying to see what she...

Kearsage North Fire Tower - Snazzy Upgrade

You know, I am happy that lots of people are taking up the outdoor games. I hope they get educated; I hope they learn to be safe. But I don't mind a crowd. And I don't mind waiting in line to get on a climb. People are outside, getting healthy! That's so much better than paying tons of...

Lost the soles of his Boots

I've had the sole come off a boot in the backcountry. It was an old Trezetta ice climbing boot; I was up on a climb, and my right foot placements "felt quirky." Looked down, and saw the sole was coming off the boot. So I managed to get down, duct taped it together, and was able to hike out...
