Controversy over logging in the Green Moutain National Forest

From the USFS Website: "The mission of the Forest Service is to sustain the health, diversity, and productivity of the nation’s forests and grasslands to meet the needs of present and future generations." The article is just spouting nonsense. If the USFS ended all logging everywhere, it...

A couple of recent Helicopter Rescues at BSP

Thanks, TEO; that's good info. DEC should have always used pressure treated, even in the CCA days. No material harm in use on a hiking trail. But at least they finally came to their senses. Now if we can get some of NY's 200 BILLION $ budget to repair all the rotted out trails, that would be...

A couple of recent Helicopter Rescues at BSP

These things have long been known, and were accepted as a tradeoff. Certainly, I don't plan on eating the wooden steps... But the manufacture of CCA treated wood stopped in 2004, and the current wood is ACQ treated; much less toxic. Up to date, more balanced info here...

A couple of recent Helicopter Rescues at BSP

We are going through the same thing here in the ADKs. The current position can be neatly summarized: "We don't want to "improve" a section of trail with aids, so our only option is very difficult re-routes. And we have no resources to complete the very difficult re-routes. So we will...

Parking Fees at Franconia Notch State Park?

Actually, it is a binary choice between "activities that benefit the local resource" and "sucked into the general fund." And it almost always gets sucked into the general fund. Studies have shown this. Set up the system and prove me wrong.

Parking Fees at Franconia Notch State Park?

OK, I'll go, even though I'm not a local: 1. I have no problem with parking fees. Today's hikers are interested in convenience, and will happily pay a fee for good parking. 2. 100% of the fee should stay local for parking maintenance and trail maintenance, and to pay front country stewards...

Mt Washinton Rescue - Presi Traverse No Map or Compass

"No light source." It's like a broken record. How many times is that the biggest problem, and at the same time the easiest, lightest and least expensive problem to address? This should be a priority issue for enforcement, as I have advocated repeatedly in the past.

    Via Ferrata gear recommendations?

All the mainline brands of tethers are probably good. Make sure to get one that is "dynamic" (elastic). People have died using static climbing gear on via ferrata. Also get one with redundancy, where you will always be clipped in to something, even while moving part of the tether to the next...

Any one get a ticket at a Fee area despite having a valid day use pass?

They are available for free over here in the Adirondacks. Please take as many as you can: https://www.vftt.org/forums/showthread.php?61409-Mt-Colden-loop-advice-needed

    Are you a List-O-Holic?

We completed two rounds of the 46 (1986, 2001) and that was it. The only list I am pursuing now is the list of cliffs I want to visit that have potential for previously unexplored climbing. That "fun destination" list is endless, so I always have an option of someplace new to go on a free day.

    Albany Mountain Trail Issue

But that is the population that is out there right now. Reality. Competent managers manage based on reality. "Managers" that are working in an imaginary world are not competent. Related: https://www.vftt.org/forums/showthread.php?61795-Bootleg-sign&p=459653&viewfull=1#post459653

    Bootleg sign?

This is a clear-eyed observation. Same thing over here in the Adirondacks. This change has been developing for decades. Today's hiker population is different from the hiker population of 40 years ago. Most hikers now are focused on convenience. "If something get's in the way, [they] go...

    Grouse Obsessed with NH Man

Neat! An as the article says, not unheard of. A newly improved ski trail opened this most recent season at Gore Mountain. It's called "Pete's Paradise." (For those familiar with Gore, Pete's Paradise is the improved, regraded incarnation of the trail "Cut Off.") The backstory on the trail...

Very unfortunate Hammock Camper within Wild River

Unfortunate. And a reminder of the tension forces that develop on "horizontal" ropes and cables when loaded. There have been several previous incidents like this. Two I can recall: >About ten years ago an upstate NY man was setting up a zip line in his yard. He attached the uphill end of...

My letter to Baxter State Park>>>>

Public facing employees also tend to mirror the vibes they get from how they are treated by their own management. Treat your people badly, they will treat the customer badly. Treat your people well, they will treat the customer well. Of course as in any "social science" assessment, there is...

    Covid Sh%tstorm at Everest Base

Very interesting. But at this point, it's hard to drill down to factual information, as the article suggests. It appears likely that the Nepal Government is downplaying the problem to protect tourism. Also, the sensationalist article so heavily conflates the situation in India and Nepal...

    What's Your Go-To Summer Daypack?

Like TEO, I'm still using my ancient MEC pack, the yellow Brio 25. I will mourn when it dies, but it is holding up well after 20 years. I also had a Serratus 50, which I abused the heck out of, and it still lasted about 15 years. Now when I shop, I'm looking at Deuter, mostly because I have...
