    Gravity Fed Water Filter Systems

Focus on the backpacking criteria. For car camping, just bring a bunch of gallon bottles of water - the car can carry it.

Mask mandate on Federal property, including WMNF

But again, no one here is arguing that. This thread is about the effectiveness of mask mandates; not about the effectiveness of masks. If you want to start a discussion about the effectiveness of masks, please do so.

North Face teams up with Gucci

As few logos as possible. In large part, this stuff (clothing, gear, etc.) is all made in the same Chinese factories. You can buy the "no logo" base layer in Walmart for $10, or you can pay a bunch of middlemen for the same garment with a logo for $60. Safety gear (climbing ropes and...

Mask mandate on Federal property, including WMNF

Right! Much conflation here. The bottom line is mask mandates are ineffective. This is regardless of whether "masks don't work" or whether "people don't wear mask when mandated to do so." The poster's conclusion is correct. You are only debating about the reason why it is correct.

North Face teams up with Gucci

This article: https://rockandice.com/climbing-news/gucci-and-the-north-face-team-up-with-the-help-of-jimmy-chin-successfully-satirize-themselves/ suggests that this may be intentional satire. If so - great! North Face (and Patagonia (or "Patagucci")) have been laughable for quite a while...

Whiteface Memorial Highway - Ski Conditions

Went up and down the Whiteface highway today (for the first time). A friend had just gotten his new skis with AT bindings and skins, and wanted to try them out in a benign setting. So we used our skin skis (K2 Wayback; Voile Switchback binding). >Very easy grade; not really a ski trip; more...

Mask mandate on Federal property, including WMNF

Same here. We always carry masks, but have always been able to just step far enough away from the trail to not have to put them on. Just have to be paying attention and see people coming a little bit ahead of time, so you can pick a suitable spot to leave the trail. A couple times this summer...

Proposed $5 entrance fee for Mt Washington Summit Building

Regardless of semantics; and regardless of who pays for what; and even regardless of what's "right" or "wrong"... Doesn't anyone have the common sense to look at the population, and try to understand what behaviors will be incentivized when a new policy is implemented?

    Kearsage North Trailhead Parking Tickets

Sounds a lot like over here "across the pond" in the Adirondacks. We have quite a number of folks with the "I've got mine, now I want the government to chase everyone else out" mentality.

    Backcountry Pain Pills

For me for personal use, it's Ib and Captain Morgan. Used that combo once when my knee hurt after a hard hike; got out in comfort. As a guide, I carry Ib, Acetaminophen, and Aspirin. Different applications for each. One client had a tight muscle problem in his back that would act up after a...

    Wheeled backpacks for hiking?

In most places in the Adirondacks, most of these devices would be really impractical due to the nature of the trails. If I were injured and could not carry a heavy pack, I would be looking to go more in the direction of ultralight backpacking, rather than using a contraption to carry weight...

    Knee Sleeve / Support Help

If it's practical for you, get to a PT and try to get an assessment of the source of your knee pain. Knee pain can be caused by several completely different conditions, which can be helped by completely different treatments. A sleeve works for one thing; a Chopat works for something else; a...

Help me pick some new XC/BC Ski gear

The Madshus Annum (it used to be the Karhu XCD Guide before Madshus bought Karhu) has full metal edges and fishscales, and is "single camber" so it's pretty easy to turn. I have skins for it also, which I have used occasionally. They kick and glide OK on gentle terrain, but they are a bit wide...

Help me pick some new XC/BC Ski gear

What skis do you use for tele now? Do you ski lift served tele? If you are riding a modern ski there, you might be disappointed in the downhill performance of a skinny, straight sided ski (even on "gentle" downhills). For lift served right now I am skiing K2 Pinnacle 95, profile 132-95-115...

Avalanche in Catskills (Belleayre Ski Resort)

I wonder if there was any man-made snow in that mix? Avalanches sometimes happen at eastern resorts with man-made snow due to the water content, exaggerated layer structure, and unnatural "ice bead" snow crystals that don't interlock...

Proposed $5 entrance fee for Mt Washington Summit Building

These are good observations. Predictions: Additional $ will go to state government and not come back; workers actually on the ground at the location will not benefit; the resource will be further degraded. It's starting to sound like the Adirondacks over there...

    Waterproof Socks ?

Very general opinion here: My experience with "waterproof/breathable" materials is that they don't hold up well as handwear or footwear. Too many stresses and impacts. Jackets and pants hold up better, because the material is just draped most of the time, even when moving; not usually subject...
